I honestly don’t understand how people can build a community around a Facebook page. But I guess it’s been done many times so maybe I just lack the capacity to understand.
Trying to navigate around the Pokemon Facebook groups like Virbank… I just feel like a 72 year old using the internet for the first time
In all seriousness, we considered a FB group ages ago but realized it would be redundant. Something like discord is nice as it’s a simple chat add-on to the site. Where FB is its own platform that doesn’t really add anything to E4.
Looks like an automatic response system for the most commonly used (and abused) questions would help you out, and maybe prevent a headache or two at the same time…
I think this last point is definitely the best answer.
Forums are great for collecting. You can reference old stuff, read to find answers from past activity, post photos, and engage in a slower manner. Activity doesn’t get buried in the same way it does on Facebook. The mode of operation on a forum is round table by virtue of its form.
Facebook collecting groups run into issues with staying active enough to thrive. Old stuff gets buried, the emphasis is on videos/photos such that discussion rarely gets past a certain depth threshold, and the comments/reply to comments make things get pigeonholed. The mode of operation on social media is chitchat by virtue of its form.
I think Dan’s last point is evident in how news-based content typically does on E4. You usually just get a handful of opinions on it before it fades. People like to see it and be up to date, but it’s not a discussion driver in most instances (barring more comprehensive stuff like entire set releases). E4 really thrives when posts are topical and abstract.
Generally speaking, I think one thing that keeps E4 great is that it’s an active hole in the wall. We aren’t racing to X members, constantly running live videos in an attempt to be relevant, or branding. It’s just a place you go to get away from all of that. 10 years is just around the corner and our biggest branding question is “should we make tshirts for ourselves and how do we make it enjoyable”. And we are on year 8 of that discussion. lol
So while the set-apart nature of E4 isn’t without its criticism (often considered elitist or outdated), it’s exactly what we’ve always been crafting and maintaining as an administration. And it’s why we are so careful with how things like the Discord or any linked materials reflect back on E4. If E4 does something that undermines its nature, there is potential for erosion. And I think a Facebook group would erode, not strengthen, the forum.
I had a pre-typed message along the lines: “sorry I constantly receive messages and don’t have time to respond. If you want my advice feel free to message me on patreon”
Majority of the people would complain and call me greedy because I didn’t give them free advice.
