If you search the forum there is a large thread already about dbs cards. I Personally also collect them on the side for the same reason. Sadly i dont see most the cards holding much value other than a few key ones, but hey who cares collect what you want
Victory Strike Goku, the 4 TOP auto cards and most of the secrets (if not reprinted) might carry significant value in 5-10 years time but atm there’s too many people grading gem mint, pristine cards for them to be considered special.
Nobody seems interested in sitting on sealed product for the game, it’s being sold far below cost for most releases. There’s potential there if you want to sit on some for a few years.
The Tournament of Power (TOP) Goku, Frieza, Vegeta and Beerus Special Rares is what I’m referring to.
Nobody knows. Toei could think DBSTCG hasn’t met expected sales targets and might discontinue the game/give the license to a different company for all we know.
Dragon Ball as an IP isn’t going anywhere but the nostalgia of Dragon Ball isn’t derived from a tcg like Pokemon cards are. It’s not just the age of the tcg, but the place it has within the dragon ball nostalgia-sphere. There’s a lot of Dragon Ball fans that are completely unaware that another Dragon Ball tcg exists but everyone knows what a Pokemon card is.
At the inception of Pokemon the card game WotC created was probably thought of by all the interested parties as just another way to merchandise Pokemon alongside action figures, clothes, random spin-off board games, etc. The DBSTCG is marketed towards people who like/play TCGs rather than merchandised alongside Dragon Ball Super itself in the manner Pokemon Cards were in 1999 and the early 2000s. DBSTCG was designed as a game from the ground up for a niche market.
The trajectory of sought after cards in DBSTCG will probably be closer to MtG/Yu-Gi-Oh! where cards that are extremely meta-relevant in the game might experience no growth for many years only for their iconic nature or legacy to cause players to seek them out years and years later. Maybe their will be a Goku that the playerbase considers to be the holy grail and maybe that could be Awakened Power Goku.
I personally think there’s a long time before that happens and that at the rate DBSTCG cards are graded there’s plenty of time to pick up things. I wouldn’t be in a rush to get anything except worlds prize cards, if you can find people willing to part with them.
I never really thought about it in that perspective, and I guess you’re right.
How well DBS is doing, not only the show but the games and the hype for the IP in general doesn’t necessarily translate directly to the tcg purely because it’s so new and the tcg was not brought up with the IP as Pokemon and Yugioh were.
I guess time will tell how well it does, but for now I’ll probably continue to collect at least the TB boxes mainly due to their short print runs and specific secret rares/spr’s lol
As I said in the big discussion topic about the fancy-foil Goku; There never been a Dragon Ball TCG that lasted
I think DBSTCG will last as long as Toei/Bandai is willing to adapt DBHeroes Arcade Cards to be printed in English for a small, limited, no organized play region.
In the past, they always pulled the plug before it could get to a stabilized tournament environment. A TCG cannot succeed on artwork alone and I have the feeling DBSTCG sometimes is just surviving on it.
DBSTCG is barely promoted in Europe. I have seen no packs in any of the four game stores in one city, another city every single store carries the last 2-4 sets. The latter being the city with the biggest player group, active Facebook community and a lot of old players that played the Score Entertainment DBZ TCG. These guys also play Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokémon and DBSTCG isn’t their prime focus, just another hobby. This store is organizing a monthly tournament with 8-12 contenders, nothing sanctioned by Bandai. And what’s the point of playing a TCG when there is no official tournament support? Playing it with friends only goes so far… And it’s not a TCG like Magic, where you can carry your deck around if you go out and always will find a few players in random game stores able to play Standard/Modern/EDH.
Brutally honest, looking at my binders filled with Score Entertainment DBZ TCG; DBSTCG has no future. A DBZ themede TCG is something that they reinvent every X years, try to make some money out of with poor to no marketing.
I think any Dragon Ball TCG is problematic due to the fact that it is based on a separate franchise (unlike Magic or Yu-Gi-Oh) with new content produced at a slow rate (unlike Pokemon). I think that limits the development of the TCG.
That being said, the old cards have held value pretty well. The demand for Score DBZ cards is rather low, but the supply is even lower. The more popular cards, especially limited edition rare foil personalities and URs, have grown and continue to grow significantly in value.
Oh yeah that was a shocker for me. I was looking to rebuild my old Blue Style Trunks Dragon Ball Deck, and the Stage 1 HT used to be expensive in the past, but now… crazy.
It’s a tool box from a Hardware chain in Australia. You should be able to find something similar in nearly every other country.
As for the custom acrylic case, they’re made by PR Displays in the UK. He has the sizing now for DBS boxes, so they should be easy to order. Link here:
Awesome set up! Been collecting Dragonball Super cards myself. One of my favorite side hobbies. Been enjoying it more than Pokemon atm actually. If there’s already an established thread on DBS cards, can someone shoot me the link? Thanks!
