I have seen the E4 VGC tournaments and wondered if anyone would be interested in doing a TCG tournament as well? I’ve recently started playing and even went to my first local with @mthursty almost two weeks ago now-- it’s a ton of fun!
I am envisioning this being played on Pokemon TCG LIVE, and am primarily interested in standard format play. I have no experience setting something like this up, but if anyone is interested we can put our heads together and figure it out!
Never played, but want to?
For people that are interested but haven’t really played before: there’s tons of great resources free online for learning how to play and finding popular deck lists. Pokemon TCG LIVE itself is a free application that honestly gives you tons of rewards and free cards for playing. They also give you some free decks to start with.
Building your own deck as a beginner
You can’t actually directly pay for cards in the game, BUT what I did was purchased 400 code cards from the cheapest set online (400 is the redemption limit for one set), for about ~$40 CAD. Then, I entered all of them into LIVE. The trick here isn’t to buy codes for sets you want cards from-- buying 400 codes means by the end you have lots of duplicate cards. You can only have 4 (a full playset) of any card. The extras will be traded for credits and you can use credits to craft any card you want. I only did this after playing a ton with another deck. It should be noted, LIVE gives you a free Charizard ex deck which is one of the best decks in the current format.
Just a little note for anyone interested, but unsure on where to start or how to get into it. You can download the app and be set up with playable decks for free within minutes of downloading.
ANYWAY, please let me know if anyone is interested in this !
The main problem with doing webcam with real cards is it would require everyone playing to physically build a deck which is far more costly in time and money than just using live. That and everyone would need a webcam and way to mount it, etc. it would just be a lot more work, time and money imo
@silversnorlax204 best of 3 with a timer could take like an hour, hour and a half tops, Best of one could be like 20-30 minutes for a game. Pocket tournament doesn’t sound like a bad idea either tho
okay, I’m not interested in using it, so I’ll just not participate then. If you manage to get a tourney going, Please save the matches for viewing. I wanted to watch the videogame tournament, and it looks like they didn’t save the replays for it. So I’ll never know how it went down!
Not to distract here, but replays from the gen 4 vgc and singles matches should be available for nearly all, if not all, in that thread. Some from the gen 3 tourney too.
I would be interested, I really enjoy the TCG. I have never played TCG Live. I would need t9 investigate that. A Pocket tournament could also be fun, probably easier to pull off. @tcgmaine plays live, they may have some ideas on how to get it going.
Thanks for the tag! Honestly I haven’t played heavily in quite a while, but I’d be interested in a tournament if things lined up! That said, I have no idea how to set one up, but I know there are a lot out there, so I’m sure it’s possible!
IRL tournaments are best of 3 in 50 mins and best of 1 in 30 mins. The Pokemon TCG Live mobile or PC app would be your best bet, relatively easy to use and Im sure most people on E4 have tons of unused code cards lol. Id donate code cards as well if needed to help some peopel out.
I just recently moved over to Live from Pocket (after the latter re-ignited my interested in playing the TCG). It’s great that they give everybody skeletons of meta decks to start out with, and I’m lucky I had played (and traded a lot on) PTCGO, so I could mostly jump right in. Been having fun with the free decks and one netdeck. When I get more comfortable, I’ll probably start to build some off-meta decks to play for fun
All this is to say that I would be interested! Although I think we’d probably only attract those that were already somewhat interested in the TCG already. I think the barrier for a completely new player may be a bit high.
Also tagging @connorc in case they’d be interested.
I have tried playing so I know the basics on the game but I have never gone into deck building or other meta stuff. But I will be down to be a part of the competition.
Also I would prefer live since Pokemon Pocket is not available in the Netherlands. However, if I am the only person who prefers live due to these circumstances then please go ahead with Pocket since I know it is much much faster and it does not make any sense to pick live.
This thread is for live! I personally find pocket a little boring, its a very simple version of the tcg. If you have any questions about the tcg drop em in the thread I (although i myself am still new lol) and im sure everyone else would be happy to help!
When it comes to deckbuilding, you can build your own completely from scratch, but I just looked up top 10 meta decks [prismatic evolutions], find one that you think looks cool, and then play and tweak from there based on how you like it. I went with charizard initially bc the child in me was like CHARIZARD EX IS PLAYABLE?!?!
