eBay seller limits affecting high-value items, alternatives?

This is both a question as it is a warning I guess.

A lot of people that are joining or joined the hobby and wanted to get high-value items, think that once the time is right they can just easily sell it on a platform like eBay.

However, eBay has strong seller limits for those that are new (not to mention without reputation) but even to older (buyer) accounts. I believe the initial seller limit might be around $2000 per month. You can request an increase only after you’ve filled that “budget”, but even then they might only increase to $3000…

What are the alternatives for people that want to sell items above $10,000? Would you have to go to specific auction websites that specialize in pokemon (Trollandtoad, PWCC)? Or make private offers via forums like these and social media?

(I’m not in the process of wanting to sell something of that value but I am trying to think ahead should there come a time when I want to sell)

While we’re on this topic, will any of you be affected by the upcoming breakup between PayPal and eBay?

Thanks for reading!

That is pretty good info to share around, I did not know that there was limit how much you can sell on eBay per month.

Had no idea eBay and PayPal we’re breaking up

Pwcc fee is just 11% for cards $2000+. If you can wait the month for listing + auction + payment it’s been a no-brainer to me to send to them and avoid all the scammers and such on eBay.

Do you have more information on that?
Regarding the seller limit, I have noticed it as well, so I called ebay customer service and asked how I could increase (decrease) the limit. They said that if they consider me a reputable ebayer, all I have to do is ask them to change the limit. At that time I didn’t need to change my limit so the talk was of informative nature only.Fast forward a few months and my limit suddenly went from 2000€ to 10,000€ per month. So, I’m not sure what triggered it (maybe a certain amount of sales done or a certain overall value of sold items reached, or maybe a certain amount of positive feedback). In any way, reaching a seller limit of $10,000 isn’t that hard. I’m a private seller with maybe 15 sales total.

PayPal was spun off as an independent company from eBay back in 2015. Since then eBay has slowly but surely been creating their own managed payments platform so they can decouple completely from PayPal. That is expected at the end of the year. pages.ebay.com/seller-center/service-and-payments/managed-payments-on-ebay.html

This has been known since 2018 though, only now the transition is beginning and it will conclude in 2021

Good to know you were able to easily increase your limit. I think it’s important to let people know though so their expectations are lowered. I have only a couple sales so still a ways to go :stuck_out_tongue:

I already had a reasonable number of sales under my belt on eBay at the start of the lockdown in the UK. I decided I wanted to sell a large amount of individual cards on eBay as I had time now to do so. My sales limit was something like £3000 and 300ish items. I sold around 130 items I believe last month and asked for a increase in my limit. Ebay put it up to £15000 and up to 900 items. If you have some cheap bulk cards your willing to put the time in to sell it can help your feedback.

They ask you a couple of questions when you ask for a limit increase like do you have a supplier or are you selling off your own possessions, this must have some influence on how large a limit they set you. I guess if you have a supplier they will give you a higher allowance!
