Fake or Real? Pokemon Base Set 2 Booster Box and Packs

Hello everyone. Today I visited a very old toy shop. The owner of the shop was a 70-year-old man. Pokemon cards caught my attention in the old toy store. When I asked the old man, he said that he had these cards for 25 years. I bought them. I want to ask you. Do you think these cards are fake?

I noticed that there is no R ® symbol on the right corner of Wizard of the Coast logo on the back of the packages. Look carefully and you will see. The original sign, the letter R ®, is missing next to the logo. But the old man said that he had had this box for 25 years and the inside of the box was unopened and its condition is extremely good. Please tell me are these fake or original? What is your opinion? and why?

When I asked a friend, he told me that these were packages produced and released by the same company, Wizard of the Coast, in 1997, but were not identified as original. Do you think this is true? Why would the same company produce and market both original and fake products?

I share the photos with you. I would be happy if you inform me. I also found a few gold colored cards in the same toy store. Old man gave them as a gift to me. What are these gold cards? Are they original? Does the series have a name?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Sorry to say but the packs are at a minimum resealed. Look at the top crimp on the one pictured. On the surface, the box looks okay, but not sure about the blurry country codes on the bottom of the box. Regardless though I would bet all the cards inside the packs are either fake or are filled with commons.

Unfortunately the gold cards are fake. They’re usually made out of some plastic material or they are metal. I’ve seen colors in gold, silver, green, and black.

I agree with @cwebfan23 , the pack crimps are wrong. Looks like they were resealed with these fake gold cards

If those gold cards came out of those packs, then the shop owner lied to you about having them for 25 years. Those are newer fakes that came out a few years ago.

How much did you pay?

As others mentioned here, and some in discord, these are fake.

  • Color of the box is incorrect (could be lighting?)
  • Crimps on the top of the packs are incorrect
  • Gold cards are reproductions
  • Packs are arranged in the box incorrectly

I think you ran into a wily 70 year old shop owner looking to make a sale

I paid Usd300 for the box.

Thank you for confirming that the packages are fake.

I did not open the packs, the gold cards did not come out of those packs.

Also thank you for informing me about the fake gold cards.

paid usd300 for the box. (36 packs)

The blurb on the side of the box (Pidgeot art) is riddled with punctuation errors. Definitely not legitimate.

If I am not mistaken these fake base set 2 cards are still a fun collectable. I had thought there was someone on E4 who had a collection of these fake cards but I could be mistaken.

Unfortunately I can not see the value being close to 300usd but they may still have some value to those who enjoy the history.

To add some more points, the inconsistency between the same packs like the text placements between the two pidgeot packs is a red flag. The text on a side of the box is also all wrong, it has information that shouldn’t be there and there’s spaces missing between the words etc. They are points that may not be obvious for someone not familiar with these products, like many of the points already mentioned, but clear signs for someone who knows what the actual products look like.

About the price too, if it is too good to be true it usually isn’t real. These days everyone and their grandma knows pokemon cards have value so getting a box with a price of one pack isn’t realistic. I would bet that the shop owner knew very well what he was selling and just cashed in a fake box, especially since he had other fake cards too there. Also what you mentioned about wizards of the coast isn’t true, someone producing fake packs and printing their name as the copyright doesn’t mean the actual company has anything to do with these.

In any case sorry that you were scammed, perhaps you have some chances of returning it and getting your money back but the shop owner likely would then just find the next person to scam.
