Friend found a magic-back Blastoise card, legit check?

Hi! A friend of mine has bought a collection a while back and finally found time to take out all cards. In between all bulk cards was this blastoise with a magic back card. I’m interested to hear if you guys think this is real or not? I’ve checked out some youtube video’s and I’m not 100% sure so I figured I’d see if anyone here has a bit more experience in verifying this card.

All I can say is it doesn’t look like any of the copies I’ve seen authenticated so far.

  • The Wartortle is way too big
  • The frame looks completely different
  • The © in front of NINTENDO doesn’t lign up with the “it” above
  • That lightning bolt icon next to HP, I mean, what even is that?
  • Font looks bold in places it shouldn’t be
  • Correct me if I’m wrong, but it doesn’t look square cut

Have you seen the card in person? Maybe you can confirm whether or not it’s Holofoil because I can’t tell from the photo.

Haven’t seen it in person no so I can’t say if it’s holofoil or not . But I do see your points for sure, a couple of differences with the other ones. I’ll see it friday in hand so I can report some more info then, but I definitely appreciate the input!

I would wait for others knowledgeable members, but imho it has a home printer vibe.

Check under magnification to see if it has the CMYK rosette patterns

It COULD be legit as there were a few variations of this BUT I’d lean on the side of not as it does look like a low quality print

How much did he pay for it?

$100 on ebay, probably not

it was part of a bigger collection and was in between bulk cards in a pocket from a binder actually, he’s had this collection for months and only now decided to pick out the bulk cards from the binders and there it was

I agree with the above. In addition, the font and positioning is different

It’s hard to actually align all the parts because they don’t align nicely.

The HP is noticeably different.

The art box is also cropped differently:

Now, differences doesn’t mean 100% fake. But it does mean there’s little reason to believe it’s real. There are a lot of visual characteristics that come off as fake. No holo is a bad sign. Also the story that it was just found in a bulk lot randomly seems absurd.

99 to 1 it’s fake.

The borders strike me as being more of a dark mustard color in this picture than the other Protostoise’s that I’ve seen. It could just be the photo or there could certainly be a lot of variance with cards of this nature.

Unfortunately, for that reason, I think cards like this would be easier to fake so I would definitely remain skeptical until gathering some solid provenance.

Gut reaction is fake. Near immediate reaction. Sorry man!

Ah right, thanks for the elaboration!

Yeah makes sense as well, thanks!

Yeah no problem at all! Appreciate the input

I hear cgc will grade it either way and just slap test print on it or prototype :joy::joy::joy:

I am thinking though, with how big this card is and everyone mentioning it is probably fake but nobody saying it’s 100% fake, it might be worth making sure 100% though. How would you go about with verifying this 100%? Maybe sending it to CGC?

I think PSA did an article in one of their early tcg magazines about how they verify obscure Pokemon cards. As someone mentioned above, take a microscope and see if you have the multiple colors for each ink dot

I think it’s copium but it can’t hurt to try if you real want to

Besides matching the rosette pattern, you can check the green mana symbol for the red dot L shape.

This is nearly impossible to replicate and should be on the back of every mtg card.

This will be novice but how it that impossible to replicate specially with todays technology

I mean, for the 10 dollars or whatever it is, i would. Just send to cgc and let them decide?
