Funny/miscellaneous collection ideas, yee ha!

I liked the post about collecting all psa charizards even 1 and 2, so I suppose this isn’t necessarily side collections as this could be just strange and creative things to collect within pokemon tcg as well… But what are some of peoples preoccupation’s or funny obsessions or collections that aren’t necessarily in demand at all and actually more comedy or novelty orientated? Maybe even futile ones like collecting all of one type of favorite card, something like that? Would be curious to see, I’m only like a small starting collector so also trying to find some kind of really miscellaneous themes eventually for myself haha. Seems like it would make collecting more fun on the side if there was also searches for certain themed or miscellaneous merchandise and cards. What’s some of your ideas and things you’re looking for?

My own collection is pretty basic and done by a lot of people: collecting Pikachu Cards.
Still, both me and @justinator are a.f.a.i.k. the only ones that go to the such huge details when it comes to our Pikachu collection. With these details I not only mean every language in 1st/unl. and regular/rev. holo, but also the codes of the EX sets, every possible stamp / promo release, Glossy/non-Glossy, commonly known misprints, etc. etc. I currently have 630 out of the 786 unique Pikachu Cards I know to exist (which can be found in my collection thread), and currently still have 31 cards incoming.

I also really like @xgav1337x 's Base Charizard PSA collection. It’s original and unique.
Did you manage to find the missing PSA2 to complete it, Gav?

I also really like @tony 's misprint and Blastoise collection. I’ve collected Yu-Gi-Oh misprints myself for a short while, and it’s something fun to collect and also pretty unique. (I’ve also noticed that Yu-Gi-Oh seems to have more misprints than Pokémon by a long shot…) Off-topic: But imo this Yu-Gi-Oh misprint collection is pretty impressive.
Btw Tony, do you an overview page of all the misprinted cards/Blastoise you own?

Also Yu-Gi-Oh, but something similar could be done with Pokémon cards: homemade 3D cut card collection.

I made a point of collecting all the XY commons in the Lego movie promo releases with pikachu, you can see the post here:

Haha that Pikachu collecting is hilarious and sounds fun. The 3d cards as well, it’s a cool enthusiasm to have for it I imagine a lot of people might really hate on what happens to the cards though. Maybe I’ll just keep an open mind and see what comes up now I’m getting into it again, but keep these going they’re funny as heck.

I’ve considered collecting all cards where a Pokemon is doing the dab, just for giggles. XD

A weird but awesome thing I see people do is have an entire binder of the same type of rare card. Typically it’s something not too rare but not too common :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t do this for Pokémon but Yu-Gi-Oh instead: Every single rarity/holo pattern at least once. For Yu-Gi-Oh I currently have all regular TCG ones and a few OCG and a few misprinted TCG. Little over 60 in total.

For Pokémon there are also quite a lot of different types of holo/rarity. I think I have about 40-50 different ones even though I don’t explicitly collect them. Will edit in details of what I mean later when I have some time.

Nice, a yugioh collector too? *high fives*

Forgot to mention how I collect: I typically aim for trophy cards, are the old WOTC sets. Very vanilla, which makes it really expensive to collect :stuck_out_tongue:

Not anymore tbh. Well, kinda… I did buy the first Legendary box recently, and have the second one incoming.

I’ve collected Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh cards in general for years, with a lot of (sometimes big) pauses in between. About a year ago I started focusing on Pikachus though, and well, that has lead me to this forum.

I mainly collected Yu-Gi-Oh rarities and Token cards as sub-collections at the time, but I bought almost any card I either liked the artwork of, or had a great effect (since unlike Pokémon I’ve played Yu-Gi-Oh with friends and online for a while).

To get back on what I said before:

All the TCG Yu-Gi-Oh rarities I knew of at the start of 2016:

  • Common
  • Rare (Silver holo name)
  • Black Rare (Black holo name - exclusively to BP01 & BP02 set)
  • White Rare (White holo name - exclusively for Xyz Monsters in the BP01 & BP02 set)
  • Blue Rare (Blue holo name - exclusively to the Duelist League participation sets)
  • Red Rare (Red holo name - exclusively to the Duelist League participation sets)
  • Green Rare (Green holo name - exclusively to the Duelist League participation sets)
  • Purple Rare (Purple holo name - exclusively to the Duelist League participation sets)
  • Bronze Rare (Bronze holo name - exclusively to the Duelist League participation sets)
  • Light Blue Rare (Light Blue holo name - exclusively to the Duelist League participation sets)
  • Light Green Rare (Light Green holo name - exclusively to the Duelist League participation sets)
  • Super Rare (Holo image)
  • Ultra Rare (Golden holo name, Holo image)
  • Secret Rare (Mirror-silver holo name, Diagonal holo image)
  • Prismatic Secret Rare v1 (Blocked silver holo name, Vertical & horizontal holo image)
  • Prismatic Secret Rare v2 (same as v1, but with a Ghost-like holo name, instead of prismatic secret rare name)
  • Ultimate Rare v1 (Golden holo name, Partly holo image, Holo Attribute, Holo Level, Holo image border)
  • Ultimate Rare v2 (same as v1, but always with a Completely holo image)
  • Ultimate Rare v3 (same as v2, but also with: Holo description border, Holo card border)
  • Ultimate Rare v4 (same as v3, but with partly image like in v1 instead of full image)
  • Ghost Rare (Mirror-silver holo name, Completely mirror-silver holo image and 3D effect)
  • Gold Rare v1 (same as Ultra Rare, but with: Golden holo Level, Golden holo image border, Golden holo description border, Golden holo card border)
  • Gold Rare v2 (same as v1, but with a Blocked golden holo name similar to Prismatic Secret Rare’s silver name)
  • Gold Secret Rare (Gold Rare v2, with Secret Rare image)
  • Ghost/Secret Rare (Gold Rare v1, with Ghost Rare image)
  • Platinum Secret Rare (Diagonal silver holo name, Secret Rare image, Diagonal silver holo Level, Diagonal silver holo image border, Diagonal silver holo description border, Diagonal silver holo card border)
  • Starfoil Rare (Common, with holo stars on the entire card)
  • Shatterfoil Rare (Common, with holo shattered glass on the entire card)
  • Mosaic Rare (Common, with holo cubical blocks on the entire card)
  • Platinum Rare (Common, with Secret Rare name, and holo dark coating on the entire card, excluding the Attribute)
  • Normal Parallel Rare (Common, with holo small dotted grid on the entire card and a smooth surface, and it’s also slightly thicker)
  • Super Parallel Rare (Super Rare, with Normal Parallel Rare surface and slightly thicker)
  • Ultra Parallel Rare (Ultra Rare, with Normal Parallel Rare surface and slightly thicker - the Royal Decree (Hobby League) card mentioned in the video)
  • Duel Terminal Normal Parallel Rare v1 (Common, with holo big dotted grid on the entire card)
  • Duel Terminal Normal Parallel Rare v2 (Common, with holo shattered glass on the entire card)
  • Duel Terminal Rare Parallel Rare v1 (Rare, with Duel Terminal Normal Parallel Rare v2 surface)
  • Duel Terminal Rare Parallel Rare v2 (Rare, with Duel Terminal Normal Parallel Rare v2 surface)
  • Duel Terminal Super Parallel Rare v1 (Super Rare, with Duel Terminal Normal Parallel Rare v1 surface)
  • Duel Terminal Super Parallel Rare v2 (Super Rare, with Duel Terminal Normal Parallel Rare v2 surface)
  • Duel Terminal Ultra Parallel Rare v1 (Ultra Rare, with Duel Terminal Normal Parallel Rare v1 surface)
  • Duel Terminal Ultra Parallel Rare v2 (Ultra Rare, with Duel Terminal Normal Parallel Rare v2 surface)
  • (misprint) Ultra Secret Rare (Secret Rare name, Ultra/Super Rare image - the Elemental Hero Wildheart (GSE-EN001) mentioned in the video is always misprinted liked this in the set)
  • (misprint) Secret Ultra Rare (Ultra Rare name, Secret Rare image - Gaia the Dragon Champion (LOB-125) is always misprinted like this in the set)
  • (misprint) Ultimate Ultra Rare (Ultra Rare, with holo Attribute and holo Level)
  • (misprint) Secret Common Rare (Common, with Secret Rare name)
  • (misprint) Ultra Common Rare (Common, with Ultra Rare name)
  • (misprint) Reversed Secret Rare (Secret Rare, but with the diagonal lines going from the top-left to the bottom-right, instead of top-right to bottom-left - only the Secret Rares of the very first sets sometimes produced these misprints)
  • (misprint) Full Holo (Super/Ultra Rare with complete card holo - only a few cards of the very first sets sometimes produced these misprints)

I have all of them except for Reverse Secret Rare and Full Holo misprints.

And some of the OCG I know of (but there are more; haven’t really focused on OCG all that much, but just bought some when I came across them):

  • Millennium Rare (Hieroglyphic coating)
  • Millennium Gold Rare (Gold rare v2 with Hieroglyphic coating)
  • Extra Secret Rare (kinda like Secret rare, but with additional secret rare holo at the level, image border, description border and card border)
  • Collectors Rare (Sunrise Ultimate Rare image, Ghost-like name, Ultimate rare border, description border, image border, attribute, level)
  • Holographic Rare (Almost the same as Ghost Rare)
  • Duel Terminal Normal Parallel Rare v1.5 (same as Parallel Rare v1 coating, but a lot more and smaller dots)
  • Duel Terminal Rare Parallel Rare v1.5 (same as Parallel Rare v1 coating, but a lot more and smaller dots)
  • Duel Terminal Super Parallel Rare v1.5 (same as Parallel Rare v1 coating, but a lot more and smaller dots)
  • Duel Terminal Ultra Parallel Rare v1.5 (same as Parallel Rare v1 coating, but a lot more and smaller dots)
  • Duel Terminal Secret Parallel Rare v1.5 (same as Parallel Rare v1 coating, but a lot more and smaller dots, and with the TCG Duel Terminal rarities there isn’t a Secret Rare variant)
  • Duel Terminal Normal Parallel Rare v3 (Blocked coating)
  • Duel Terminal Rare Parallel Rare v3 (Blocked coating)
  • Duel Terminal Super Parallel Rare v3 (Blocked coating)
  • Duel Terminal Ultra Parallel Rare v3 (Blocked coating)
  • Duel Terminal Secret Parallel Rare v3 (Blocked coating)

I only have like 6 or 7 of these.

Anyway, for Pokémon you can make a similar list. For example:

  • Common (Dot)
  • Uncommon (Diamond)
  • Rare (Star)
  • Reverse Holo Common (Dot, Holo Card)
  • Reverse Holo Uncommon (Diamond, Holo Card)
  • Reverse Holo Rare (Star, Holo Card)
  • Reverse Foil Common (Dot, Sticker-like Holo Card - i.e. Legendary Collection set)
  • Reverse Foil Uncommon (Diamond, Sticker-like Holo Card - i.e. Legendary Collection set)
  • Reverse Foil Rare (Star, Sticker-like Holo Card - i.e. Legendary Collection set)
  • Holofoil Common (Dot, Holo Image - i.e. ‘rev. holos’ of some EX sets)
  • Holofoil Uncommon (Diamond, Holo Image - i.e. ‘rev. holos’ of some EX sets)
  • Holofoil Rare (Star, Holo Image)
  • Triple-Star Secret Rare (Tree Stars, Holo Image, beyond set i.e. 111/110)
  • Ultra Rare (Star, Holo Image, extra text i.e. EX)
  • Secret Rare (Star, Holo Image, beyond set i.e. 111/110)
  • Gold Secret Rare (Star, Gold Holo Image, Gold Holo Border, beyond set i.e. 111/110 - i.e. XY Primal Clash trainer secret rares)
  • Non-Holo Secret Rare (Star, beyond set i.e. 111/110 - i.e. XY Evolutions set)
  • Non-Holo Secret Uncommon (Diamond, beyond set i.e. 111/110 - i.e. XY Evolutions set)
  • Full Art Rare (Star, Art on entire card, holo)
  • Full Art Secret Rare (Star, art on entire card, holo, beyond set i.e. 111/110)
  • Full Art Promo (promo set, art on entire card, holo)
  • Half-Full Art Common (Dot, artwork on 2/3 of card - i.e. XY Primal Clash has some)
  • etc.
    etc.
    etc.

I counted my Pokémon collection log / statistics, and can name 59 more (so 81 in total) in my collection alone, and there are definitely more variations out there that aren’t in my collection, like the Duo-Stars that are exclusively used for price cards to name one.

I’m no pro poke scribe but am interested to see how perceptive he is about Pokemon over the coming weeks. I mean I think their two completely different corporate models - with really different appeal, marketing and purpose. But I think it could in some ways be good for pokemon to be accessed by this kind of guy, and visa versa with MTG. If the first sets in Magic had the same kind of universal appeal and familiarity as pokemon cards, the prices of those cards would go through the roof. But I suppose it’s in a different ball park, mtg doesn’t have all the movies, merch, young appeal, games and the rest of the channels that mythologize pokemon in peoples young hearts and minds lol. I suppose apart from all the niche lore and fantasy aspects like maybe dungeons and dragons kind of subculture, it’s good to see a market like mtg that’s more tested and dependant on it’s performance within just the tcg game, and appeal in use and successful changes. I guess both tcg’s could feed into each other with what could be positive for them in the future. It’s at least just good to have this angle as it creates more exposure to them both. Wall streets lookin at that illustrator pikachu heck…

eidt: also yeah he gets the vibe with miscellaneous collection ideas haha, looks like he’s always spinnin some new funny venture…

I don’t know about those Gyarados EX & Dragonite ex boxes though. Not a big fan.

He must have a giant storage area. 2/3 pallets a month really add up.

Yep, that’s gigantic in terms of a year and by the sounds of it, he wants to sit on them for a couple of years minimum.

Interesting to see what this does to the market.

His cashflow must be insane…

@quuador - Haha, cheers mate .

Just missing the last PSA 2 and it will be completed. I did start on the .5 grades, but that one will take much longer to complete.

As for Rudy, I had a quick check of Australian prices and even at distribution prices, purchasing EX boxes like the Gyarados, Aussies will pay $25 AUD [$20 USD]. That said, I can understand why it doesn’t work in Australia. The prices are just through the roof, lol.

#EDIT# Gyarados boxes sell for $35 AUD - no wonder people don’t purchase them! :sob:

Would the $11 USD price tag Rudy is paying for each Gyarados box be due to the amount he is purchasing?

I have 9 full art bianca 8 different mewtwos-ex’s and 7 yveltal ex’s. As a player its kinda funny to have this many

Not sure if this is funny/miscellaneous, but a collection containing at least one of each Pokémon is pretty cool, regardless of set, rarity, promo, holo, language, or anything else. I did this with the first 151. The only two cards I had to buy explicitly to complete it were Venusaur and Hitmonlee.

Would be cool to have all 802 Pokémon. Or more actually, since you have different forms (Unown; Castform; Deoxys; Burmy/Wormadam; Shellos/Gastrodon; Rotom; Girantina; Shaymin; Unfezant; Basculin; Darmanitan; Deerling/Swasbuck; Frillish/Jellicent; Kyurem; Meloetta; Genesect; Vivillion; Pyroar; Flabébé/Floette/Florges; Furfrou; Meowstic; Zygarde; Hoopa; Oricorio; Lycanroc; Wishiwashi; Minior; Solgaleo; Lunala), and there are Fossils; Mega Pokémon; Alola Pokémon; Shining Pokémon; etc.
