Gathering information about the 2007 Pokemon World Championship

Hey everyone, I just wanted to create this Topic to gather all information about the 2007 World Championship since it is the main theme of my collection and I want to get all the information that is out there!

Here is what I have so far:

https://web.archive.org/web/20070823073916/http://www.go-pokemon.com/op/news/articles/13.html

Based on the old website of the 07 Worlds, they invited 55 Juniors, 58 Seniors and 55 Masters. On top of that there were 13 Juniors, 7 Seniors and 5 Masters who qualified through the grinders, which makes the amount of competitors a total of 195. So the competitor versions of the 07 Tropical Wind would be limited to this number as well. (?)

Also there was an old E4 article which included some information about the distribution of the stamped versions of the Tropical Wind 07 (T32 and above).

In this article it says that the T32 was given out x192, the T16 x96, QF x48, SF x24 and the Finalist x12 copies. I just dont see how these numbers would make sense based on the amount of competitors? That would mean that almost every competitor would have received the T32 stamped card and that the T32 and the competitor language versions would have been distributed in almost the same amount, so they are equally rare?
I feel like these numbers have to be cut in half to be more accurate. With the Finalist being given out to 6 players (3 different age divisions with 2 finalists for each division) and then doubling this number to 12x SF, 24x QF, 48x T16 and 96x T32 it would make much more sense to me, but I dont have any reference for that.

If you have any more information especially on the distribution of the T32 and “better” stamped cards, please feel free to share them here. I would highly appreciate it!

You’re almost right. @Tapp shouldn’t half his numbers though, you have to double yours. You completely forgot about the VGC side of worlds! :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Oh yeah I thought about this as well
Does that mean that every competitor which is shown on the old Worlds 07 website was competing in the TCG and the VGC? Because otherwise I dont have an explanation why they would only list 195 competitors on the old website

On Bulbapedia it’s mentioned that the Video Games at Worlds was only in 2000 and 2008+, though. So not for the 1990s nor 2001-2007.

The core series Pokémon games were first featured at a Nintendo-organized World Championship event in 2000 with single battles, and later returning as Pokémon Video Game Showdown (VGS) in 2008 as a side-event to the 2008 Trading Card Game World Championships with double battles. Starting in 2009, the events were renamed the Video Game Championships (VGC).

Not sure how accurate it is, but if I add all numbers in this table of the same Bulbapedia page, it totals to 184 (12 2006 finalists; 102 regular qualifiers; 56 Premier ratings; 14 last chance qualifiers). :person_shrugging:

For the Last chance qualifiers, it states the minimum player invite per division which totals to 14. But based on this list 26 players advanced to the final rounds.

Cheers!

Yeah I also think there was no VGC in the 07 Worlds
Thanks for sharing!

The placement worlds cards were distributed slightly differently at almost every early worlds. This year, players probably got two copies of each card that they qualified for based on placement if the numbers are to be believed.

This wasn’t unheard of. Some other years like 2008 and 2011, players got one copy up for each round up until the round where they got knocked out, where they got two. In other years, players got only one for each round.

@Tapp ^ Where did you get the numbers from, for your linked article in the main post of this thread?

Greetz,
Quuador

I try to approximate the maximum number of the prizes awarded, knowing full and well a smaller number were probably given out (I’d personally rather overestimate than underestimate.) Alec had mentioned in a comment below that thread that there was a 64 player cap in each division, so I doubled that for VGC and Top 32 would be 192 players. That being said, if there were no VGC Worlds in that year then like @pfm said in reverse :joy:; that total would be halved and I need to edit those numbers!

P.S.; (I take Alec as a pretty reputable source but if there is contradictory info out there I’m happy to edit whatever needed - Just let me know ¯_(ツ)_/¯)

Edit: The reasoning I tend to include MAX trophies awarded is because I believe deep down once those cards are printed, any leftover trophies that might be unawarded certainly aren’t just being thrown in the bin somewhere

Thanks for the answer! I also think it is better to estimate the highest possible amounts instead of trying to guess the actual amount of distributed cards and I totally understand your point.

These infos helped me a lot, thanks to all of you for sharing your thoughts!

Hi everyone. It is cool that your are gathering information from that event because I am looking for it but there are pictures of Blastoise’s card mostly. I participated in that one but didn’t make the top; however, one of my brothers, who was in the seniors division at that time, made the top and actually became the National champion of my country. I don’t remember If he got an envelope containing the information regarding the invites and stuff like it happened in 2005 and 2006. I kind of miss that qualifying system but the new one has lots of perks too.
