Gym Challenge vs Gym Heroes

Hello everyone,

I plan on collecting either gym heroes or gym challenge. I havent done much research yet but which set would hold its value the best over time? Let me know what you guys think!

Hi MK.
I would pick the one I like the most and not worry about guesses on future value. By the time you complete the set you can always start on the one you desired least.

IMO, The only major difference between the sets in the Blaine’s Charizard.

Collect the set that gets you most excited. If by chance its Gym Heroes, you can still buy the Charizard standalone to hedge for long term value.

Thanks for the insight. Youre right collecting is what its all about in the end. Thank you.

Rockets Mewtwo is also a popular card that seems to sell well from gym challenge, I guess due to being a original legendary Pokemon.

Blaine’s Arcanine actually does even better. I have seen PSA 9 sell for 100 plus, but mewtwo is at 50-70.

Blaine’s Zard is the only sought after card in either set.

Ugly sets otherise.

cuz I’ve got sooo many 1st edition cards from my youth LOL

The Gym sets are aesthetically pleasing! Def one of the best looking and pretty affordable

both sets are so awesome! and nice. with the great gym leader art placed in each card for the first time.

You should collect what you love and not be concerned about the value much… both sets have hard cards to grade, worth some decent money.

blaine’s moltres in gym heroes, whereas charizard has a ton higher pop.

More scarcer psa wise is probably gym heroes, but i haven’t checked the results in a while. Gym challenge is more popular and demands higher price generally both raw and graded.

Collect both sets starting with Brock and his pokemon and end with Giovanni and his pokemon. That way you’ll have a bunch of small accomplishments along the way and it will be like conquering all 8 gym leaders!
Do what you want and have fun with it. I really can’t pick a favorite between the two.

Blaine’s moltres, Giovanni’s Persian, Sabrina’s gengar ? Far from ugly cards in those sets

Why not both? I don’t see either of them dropping in value anytime soon; just collect the ones you want the most first and go down the list whenever you see something at the price you want to pay for. Otherwise if you focus on sets, you may get bummed out on the trade offs of not being able to purchase some card when it’s in one set but not in the other.

Did you get blinded by “flash”?

Both sets have some of my favourite artworks in the hobby!

I just think most of the cards look awkward and cheap.

There’s some nice cards in here but Sugimori stock images weirdly cropped and positioned aren’t my thing.

The non-holo Gengar is cool, holo challenge print is trash though.

The rest don’t look that nice. Rocket’s Moltres and Misty’s Gyarados are the only 2 holos in the set I’m a fan of tbh.

Cheap CGI backgrounds under watercolour sketches are very jarring to me and makes both these sets look quite dated.

Hello everyone, thank you for the response on this thread. Glad I got to see some opinions. However I actually decided to start the 1st edition team rocket set :joy:. I love the magnet on art. I will be revisiting the gym series next!

Thank you

Dated? You’re kidding, right? They came out in 1999(JP) and 2000(EN). Being the 5th and 6th sets(excluding Base 2) of what will soon be 79 total, they should look dated.

That plot twist!!! Good luck
