Not sure what section this should fall under because depending on the result, it could be in the “venting” section hahaha
I’m just finding it hard to believe that after spending a premium on one of these, anyone would open them. I guess if the financial situation is comfortable enough, but I’d like to live vicariously through anyone that has opened one!
I opened a 1st edition base booster about a year ago. Pulled a holo zapdos, which graded a 10 So it ended up being worth it, but I only paid $500 for the booster…
I bought 5 unweighed boosters and opened the heavy ones. Pulled Blastoise and Poliwrath which both earned 9s. I could never bring myself to open them if I paid what some of you are paying these days though. I paid $1000 for 5 of them.
I’ve opened two unweighted booster packs once and got a holo Chansey and Alakazam. Only paid 5 Gulden for each pack, so was worth it.
PS: Both are in played quality now, so they won’t grade very well.
PPS: This was 19 years ago when I was a 7 year old kid.
PPPS: Gulden is the old Dutch currency before Europe got the Euro. Although 5 Gulden would have been 2.27 euros initially, now 5 Gulden would be 5 euros / 5.70 USD (I really don’t get old people who still try to convert back to Gulden after all these years… ).
Anyway, back on topic: I’ve never opened any 1st edition Base Set booster packs nor boxes. Considering packs are 1,250+ USD right now, I don’t even want to think the consequences of opening it and only finding a non-Holo Rare in it. If I would ever get my hands on a Base Set booster box: I will sell it as is to finance my other collection goals.
But I’m sure there are some people here who could answer your question for the recent past. And there might also be some unboxing videos on YouTube as well.
Why wouldn’t someone open it, if collecting wasn’t just only about investment. Maybe someone already has the $$ and got back into the hobby and no longer owned the cards and wanted minty fresh ones?
I have never opened one myself, but a swedish collector friend of mine did.
He purchased a 1st edition Base Set blister pack and ripped it open, only to find 11x unlimited Fighting energies.
Since that day (about 2-3 years ago) I’ve not even been interested in 1st ed Base packs, as it is a risk as big as the cost of the booster pack.
Half a year ago another collector here in sweden opened one and pulled a holo Zapdos though, so that was nice.
People wouldn’t open it because they could be a sealed collector, or they could be buying them for investment purposes. And if they’re just opening the packs to get mint cards they’re better off buying PSA 9 versions as even the holos are about half to a third of the cost of a single booster pack (besides the starts of course). So there’s many reasons why people wouldn’t and don’t open these packs nowadays lol.
I would not be surprised at all if there are a few people out there that do open these packs even at current prices.
I personally did this with some Base Unlimited packs, as that’s what my financial situation allowed but if I had the money I surely would open a full box or a few packs at least fully knowing I’m not likely to get more than half my money back.
Look at MTG, there are guys opening $10,000 sealed product and getting maybe $500 worth of cards out of it. lol
Current prices on alpha/beta/unlimited starter decks after GP Vegas…$25-30k/$16,500/$6,750.
Current booster pack prices on alpha/beta/unlimited…
$8,500/$5,000/$2,600
Right, I understand that and that is what I was gathering when the OP said it. Hey you never know, maybe they want ungraded minty but yes I do understand their are other reasons. The reason why I said what I said was that I interpreted it as, “why would anyone want to open a sealed booster box”.
I bought this listing and due to the low value and amount of booster packs I decided to open a few to make sure they were real. I only wanted to open one, but I pulled a holo so I opened two more to try and get the ratio correct.
