Has anyone had a similar experience?

Ever since I got back into collecting a few years ago I have been building a collection that ranges from Base to Team Up. When I was into pokemon as a kid it was through the original wotc era and early nintendo era. Lately I’ve realized how carried away I have gotten with modern product and hype and how I’ve gotten away from collecting what I enjoy. The modern ex, gx, and rainbow rares seem to take the luster out of collecting, there’s no nostalgic factor, they are printed to shit, the artwork is in my opinion half ass, especially with 5ban graphics on the takeover for illustrations. I’m thinking about selling nearly 2/3 of my collection and keeping everything I have graded from base to about 2004 and focusing only on those original sets that did it for me in the beginning. Has anyone experienced something similar? Specifically with the modern product?

I think you’ll find the majority of us stay away from the new stuff for all the reasons you just mentioned.

Who’s us? I’d have to disagree I see modern cards all over this forum. And in my question im referring to anything post 2004 as modern so I should probably have been more specific.

Always collect what you enjoy. Collecting is personal and everyone has their own preference. I enjoy some modern cards and usually collect a few from each new set. However, I focus most heavily on base set and other older cards for the reasons you mentioned.

What I don’t understand is why you are collecting modern cards if you don’t enjoy them. Stick to what you like.

I mean these last few years I have enjoyed collecting. I collected and enjoyed it. I bought cards graded, ungraded, sealed product. I liked what I was buying. I focused mainly on wotc era product but I enjoyed delving into more modern cards. As of recent I seem to be in a rut with collecting and was wondering if anyone has experienced getting in a rut with collecting. I’m not new to collecting. No offense to anyone but a lot of these answers on this forum are automated. It’s like one person says something and then everyone repeats it whenever possible .“Collect what you enjoy”.

Again I did enjoy them? As of recent they’ve lost their luster, my thoughts about them have changed, I’m in a rut with collecting. I was looking for someone to share experience. Not state the obvious over and over. Life is dynamic, things change.

Well if a majority of people say the same thing you cant be mad at the responses. Are you looking for someone to tell you exactly what to collect?
I started collecting when Furious Fists came out. After obtaining many various cards ended settling on completing full sets of XY era releases + my energy & coin collections. My kid collects pikachus. sold most of the rest except a few that i liked. This was once I realized how big the overall pool of cards is in total and the gotta have every card mentality flew out the window, so i think the overall statement of collecting what you enjoy is really good advice!

I’m not mad at the responses at all. I hope nobody takes it like that. I was asking if anyone has experienced getting in a slump with collecting and to share what they did to get out of it. Im not looking for an answer to my problem or for anyone to tell me what to collect. And I understand a lot of people are going to say collect what you enjoy but I mean thats not even an original thought. I thought this was a discussion board.

The confusing blur of the god awful full arts are only better than the silly reverse foil idea.

Who else feels the same?

You get it?
Lolol.

In terms of being in a rut, your engagement in the hobby doesn’t have to be constant. You can always slow down or stop buying cards until your interest is sparked again. Taking a step away might help you out. Another option is to narrow your focus and come up with a goal. Work towards a specific goal, instead of buying random cards here and there. The advice you get is going to be generic since we don’t personally know you.

Some people agree with others, some think differently. some answers are static, some dynamic.

I should have stated it just like that lol I truly enjoyed collecting what I did and seeing some of the gen 1 pokemon, even in a blur of card, was still somewhat nostalgic. Just as of recent my feelings about them have changed. I truly dislike them and I’m just not into collecting like I have been over the years. I started focusing on jungle no symbol and completed that. And I was just wondering if anyone in all their years of experience have gotten into a slump like this.

I did a similar thing, and then I did something different. When I got back into collecting, I started doing the usual Base set/WotC binders, and then moved into PSA 9 1st Edition Base. I collected whatever was new and modern off and on for about 5 years, but mostly never had the same connection to the cards, so I’d get rid of most of them. I think I really just enjoyed the process of opening the packs, plus I thought it was kind of cool to see what new cards were around. Then recently I actually started watching the Pokemon show again. I watched Sun and Moon and right now I’m in the middle of Ultra Adventures. I watch about one episode a day during dinnertime with my husband. In doing so I feel like it’s given me more of a connection with the current product releases. You see the show and then see the Pokemon cards/Full Arts and it feels like it all just makes a little more sense. I’m sure most of the people who collected the cards when we were younger also watched the show at the same time. It worked back then for me, and it’s helped me out now. I still have a huge focus on collecting older PSA cards, but now I also find it fun and refreshing to hit up TCG player every once in a while and buy up some cheap Ultra Rares for a new binder I’m filling up just for modern.

Except you literally said this:

And then you said this:

Which would lead someone to believe that you don’t enjoy modern cards, and you never once said you enjoyed modern cards in your original post, so I am not sure why you are saying “again I did enjoy them?”

So maybe, just maybe, you should be a little more clear in your original post and not get so bent out of shape at someone for literally reading what you said and responding to it.

This guy is all over the place lol. Literally has had a backhanded reply to every comment lol.

@unusmundus, Collect baset set 2 bro. And only base set 2.

True and no that’s good advice man I might take a step back. I seriously am not mad at anyone’s responses I hope it doesn’t come off like that. I’ve heard collect what you enjoy for years now and it’s great advice too. I was spending money on what I enjoyed. As of recent I’ve just looked at what I have enjoyed with a different lense all of the sudden. Like Gary said the cards are a blur. I can’t get over the print numbers either. But mainly I just thought getting back to my roots would boost me back into it and it hasn’t so I was just looking for some experience from anyone who’s been in a similar circumstance. But everyone’s advice is great and spot on.

Im not bent out of shape. In my responses I have tried to be more clear. But you’re right, you did nothing wrong. I wasn’t meaning to sound rude. You were my second response I stated the same thing in my first.

Lol that’s hilarious. You’re still repeating shit you’ve heard from others who are cooler than you

You probably didn’t have much love or friends growing up so I’m gonna give your poor character a pass this time. Good luck with whatever you decide to or don’t decide to collect.
