For cards bordering on “Oooh I really wanna keep that” and “I like it but im not that attached to it but what if I can’t get it back later” we all have some cards that sit in-between that
I feel like this is just an ongoing inner battle we all have as Pokemon collectors I would love to hear some of your methods of thinking on this subject.
Because at the end of the day sometimes we do need to sell off some things to collect the things we really truly want.
Example my current battle is:
I have a lot of WOTC doubles and I have a couple of cards that aren’t doubles but they are holos from sets im not actively looking to collect, however if I sell them I am afraid its going to be too hard to acquire again or it might just be priced out. If I don’t sell some of this stuff though it will really impact my ability to get more cards.
My solution is not to sell anything and hope the market goes down but I feel like maybe thats a poor solution because I get the feeling right now could be the best time to be buying since there is so much stuff being posted that I may not see again at those prices and I would really love to grab some sealed WOTC stuff because at the moment I have none and for me thats an issue.
Personally i would rather have tons of WOTC doubles than any of the newer stuff, I tend to sell new products (XY+) and keep anything old.
I would not expect prices to fall. It’s took the base set and other WOTC stuff over 15 years to start to rise a good amount, IMO it’s still underpriced now even with the recent boom.
Ultimately its up to you and what you like to collect
It just boils down to if I like the card or not. If I look at the card, and the only attribute I can place on it is on its value and not on its art, history or design, then I would be very likely to sell it in the future.
Only exception are keystone cards, which I may consider keeping even though I don’t like it as much but feels like every collector should have it in their collection, aka like the Base Set Charizard.
If I have doubles, sometimes that will be the first on the chopping block, but not always. I am more likely to keep the stuff I think has a ton of wiggle room for growth in value. If I need to sell something, it will be something I think is closer to the market value cap. For instance, I would keep an Art Academy, Illustration Contest, Mysterious Pearl, Championship Arena right now because I think they are still undervalued for being cards with such extremely small print runs. I would sell a Mew Ex Play, Masaki, CoroCoro Mew because they are selling at a pretty terrific price considering how many of them there are (popularity/demand dictates the price, I’m not shitting on these cards I own them and love them).
If I feel no attachment to it, then I’ll probably sell it sooner or later. Never thought I’d sell my gold star Charizard because I knew once I did, I’d likely never get another one. I sold it back in February because I realized I didn’t even like the card. It just sat in a box/toploader since I bought it 3 or so years ago, so I got rid of it and used the money to buy cards I enjoy.
Easy. I don’t sell I collect. I don’t think I live in a dream world where all the cards I want will become cheaper and more accessible. I know if I sell anything I will have to pay much more for the same card in the future. I finally finished all my major collection goals and I was debating finding some cards to flip. I decided against it tho. Instead i will expand my graded collection :-). If I ever sell it’s going to be a very long time from now and i won’t be replacing the cards. Not looking forward to that day tho. Prices going up makes things tempting but I snap myself back into reality. @jcincy101 in response to your recent video you should keep the 1st edition Neo Destiny box! My favorite set of all time and last set to have first edition stamps for English. Shinings also help
@dragoniteman, if you’ve got doubles or aren’t collecting that card/set/don’t care for it, sell it. For example I had a 1st edition shining magikarp that I told myself I would never sell because I wouldn’t get a new one. But since I already had a holo bleed unlimited and my 1st had almost no holo, I sold it so I could use it to buy cards I like more.
I have particular collection goals that, when met and no longer in need of a replacement, I keep until the end of time. Everything else is up for grabs.
In the nearly 2 years I have been collecting I have yet to regret a single purchase, but I regret every card I have sold. Even some of the card that I didn’t think I would miss I ended up buying back.
I almost never sell anything, only if I have multiples of something and I have a chance to get something I still need for my collection I might think about liquidating a bit.
Smpratte once said something like this, “sell quickly what you can obtain quickly, sell slowly what you obtain slowly.” This is something I’ve tried to keep in mind when deciding what to sell/keep.
