This might sound ignorant but hear me out. Someone I talked to swears that WOTC product could get a reprint and I know that sounds ridiculous. Their logic is if Nintendo was to buy the rights from WOTC then Nintendo could reprint everything. Even though it is far-fetch’d (pun intended) and would never happen, is that a reality that in an alternate universe could actually happen? Or is there some statement from WOTC saying something along the lines of no these rights are not for sale and there is absolutely no chance of anybody coming in and taking ownership and reprinting anything vintage.
I’m sure TPCi could reprint all of the artworks from the original sets and they have (see Evolutions). There is no way though to exactly replicate the original WOTC cards. If anything, reprinting Jungle and Fossil cards would boost the prices of the WOTC sets IMO as it brings more people into the hobby and they will want the original cards.
The cards from 1999-2000 even say Wizards on it and anything they make in 2020+ will be obviously different so it wouldn’t hurt the old product. The old product is still old and the new product will still be new, no matter what TPCi decides to print and call it.
This is just speculation, but look at XY Evolutions and the Charizard reprint. I don’t expect any single set to be reprinted like you might fear, but I do actually expect “reissues” of sets like XY Evolutions = Base Set for the later ones like the Neos. T17 reprint as the chase card, Amazing rare Umbreon and Espeon with discovery artworks, new Meganium and Feraligatr V cards, whatever. Base Set was a really strong entity on its own, but combining multiple later sets into reissues like that I can definetely see, maybe accompanying video game remakes.
I appreciate both your inputs, (let me clarify) it would be more of a 1 to 1 reprint with wotc logo, dates say 1999, full 9 yards etc. That’s sounds ridiculous and the more I think about it, it would be a very deceptive thing to do
I’m not sure that they would exactly reprint the cards even if they could. At the end of the day this is a trading card *game* and the cards from those original sets are unplayable in today’s game. Take the best Pokemon that existed in the original sets - Hitmonchan, Electabuzz, Scyther, promo Mewtwo - these cards would get destroyed. I also don’t think they’re about to reprint trainers from the original sets as unlimited use 4 per deck. Many of the original trainers were incredibly powerful and there’s a reason they rotated them out and printed legendary collection to replace some but not all cards from those sets, as well as creating Supporters and Ace Spec.
That being said, I really like the layout and especially the Galaxy Holo pattern on the early sets. IMO, better than Cosmos and way better than anything Nintendo has done since.
Lastly, the most valuable cards for collectors are first editions and errors - I can’t see them reprinting either of these even if they did reprint the sets.
Very very good point
Did someone say a collector based holiday set
In an alternative universe Pokemon cards are not for losers
