I was hoping that some of you with more knowledge about first edition base stamps could give their opinion.
Looks thick to me
It’s thin. The letters in the stamp are thin. Why people call it a ‘thick’ stamp because of the ‘1’ is beyond me.
I thought it was the thickness of the “1” that determines thick/thin stamp
Yeah but that literally makes no sense. The ‘1’ isn’t even part of the stamp, it’s just outlined in the stamp.
It’s like saying that a fat person is actually thin because the gap between his legs is thin.
Thick
Definitely thick…
So people care if a card is thick or thin stamp, but there is a discrepancy over what is considered thin and thick? Lmao
I’m gonna sit with my popcorn and watch this debate.
There is no debate. The number “1” is the indicator. A thick one is a thick stamp. A thin “1” is a thin stamp. The card is a thick stamp.
There’s no debate, just educating. The term is too far established to change now. It’s really thick one stamp, but search terms got limited so it’s been shortened to thick stamp.
As far as the desirablility goes, thick stamps are more desirable for holos. They better uniform to the rest of the set, and they’re the first stamps printed. The thin stamps are more desirable on non holos because they’re far rarer.

Literally the opposite of what this guy said

Good to know!
Thanks to everyone for your comments and insights. It looked thick to me, but I wasn’t sure.
@cullers - Thanks for the info, had no idea. Great to know!
THICC
On April 1st it’s a thin.
Although I agree with @jj1 that it never made sense these are called Thick stamps and the others Thin, it’s as @cullers pointed out too late to change it now, since the terms have already been used like this for over 20 years, ever since the stamp differences were discovered by collectors. We can only curse the one that named it like this all those years ago. Regardless, the stamp on the Mewtwo is undeniable a Thick stamp (wide “1”).
Relevant article I wrote with all stamp variations. I also mention the controversy over the terms there:
Thin Stamp:
… The “1” in this Thin stamp is thinner than the Thick stamps, and the “EDITION” is also thicker. (This also causes some controversy / discussion about the name Thin stamp, and a lot of people think the Thin and Thick stamps should refer to the stamp itself rather than the width of the “1”, which would mean the terms should be swapped. But, it is what it is, and these are known as Thin stamps.)
Originally the names were most likely called “Thick one stamp” and “Thin one stamp”, but over time the “one” part has been removed, leaving the confusing terms we have today when we talk about the stamps.
