Is your favorite Pokemon one that isn't too popular?

Charizards, Pikachus, Dragonites (and the list continues…) are crowd favorites. Then you have 'mons that aren’t crowd favorites, but their small cult followings: maybe Seviper, Ditto, Dragonair, etc. I’m sure even Caterpie has a fan following – after all, it is a cute caterpillar Pokemon.

At the bottom of the list (or ladder), you have Pokemon that are largely disliked by the community: Luvdisc, Patrat, Stunfisk, Cascoon, Burmy, etc. (I’m taking these off a list of most hated Pokemon, LOL). To individuals whose favorite Pokemon falls into this category, I’m curious to hear what you like about them, or maybe things that you think the community overlook… and perhaps an example of a card where the art really makes the Pokemon shine?

I’ve come across a few other Steelix fans, and I don’t think he falls into the bottom of the list, but he’s no Charizard as far as popularity.

I got Pokemon Gold for Christmas of '00 when steel types were introduced and I thought (and still think) they were the coolest. Finally facing Jasmine and her sending out Steelix for the first time, I HAD to have it…except it was a trade evolution.

He’s gotten a lot of love in the TCG. Here’s two of my favorites:

For some reason I never hear people talk about Armaldo.

He’s like some sort of lobster-turtle-bird hybrid. I think he’s really cool, but I don’t recall hearing anyone ever say anything positive about him. Super underappreciated!

Armaldo’s not my favorite Pokemon – though he’s certainly in my top 20. My favorites are Latias/Latios; not the most popular Pokemon ever, but I do see them get some amount of (well-deserved) love. Armaldo never gets any.

I’d say a few of my favorite pokemon that fit this question are fearow, archeops, sawsbuck, elektross, and dragalge

I don’t think Steelix is Charizard level popular, but he’s definitely not on the same level as Smoochum and Burmy LOL

Aquapolis was a hell of a set – I love the artwork on that second card.

@kinggr, I can’t even be mad

Do you appreciate the meme or do you just like it for what it is?

I thought Armaldo was fugly, but when you blow him up and take a closer look, I can see why you appreciate him! Ngl I forget this guy existed before your comment…

@andrewvt36, if i try real hard, I can appreciate Shedninja

Ninjask is just butt ugly tho… there’s no redeeming it

You bet.

Rhydon was also the first Pokemon ever made.

Its original design:

@mjs61290, pardon my ignorance, but do people actually hate Rhydon?

I kind of dig the original chibi looking Rhydon tbh

I can’t say that I have any unpopular favorites, but my dad does!

My dad’s favorite is Muk! He just thinks it’s funny that there is a toxic sludge Pokemon. So I gave him a PSA 9 Legendary Collection Muk for Christmas last year. He has it on display in his home office.

@squirtle1000, that is epic. Any reason he prefers Muk to Grimer?

Haha, not sure. Probably just because it’s bigger and the evolved form.

Touché.

I have fond memories of picking up an Oasis theme deck because I thought he was dope. Arita did such a great job on his Sandstorm artwork and I believe Armaldo (alongside Kabutops and maybe Bastiodon) to be one of the best fossil Pokémon designed.

Pikachu is my favorite so no shortage of love for him but my number 2 has been Golem for as long as I have been ranking Pokemon in my brain. I think he is under appreciated and it will forever be a travesty to me that his rookie card wasn’t a Holo

@johnnymucho , lots of potential with Armaldo fan art too!

I thought Golem was pretty lame until I came across the Crystal Golem card. Epic artwork right there. Also a fan of how he rolls around in the overworld in Pokemon Let’s Go (and BDSP?)
