Hey so I just signed up after stumbling smpratte’s youtube and it has inspired me to become a Pokemon Master once more.
I’m looking for keen suggestions on cards that could be worth investing within a long term collection that won’t break the bank for now. Good Japanese sets along with specific Japanese singles are what I’m interested in terms of info! If you’d like you can message me or post below! I like to buy good copies, I keep them in a “toploader binder” and have just started collecting again, after a few error trial runs. This time im taking it seriously, I am looking for raw Japanese singles, with about a budget of about 3 to 4 thousand for this upcoming year. I will eventually get them graded but not until the price of grading goes down(if it does) and only the cards worth it imo.
Anyways feel free to discuss and happy collecting/investing!
I would recommend to buy what you like. That way, if the value goes down or stays the same, you’ll still love your collection. Life is too short to buy stuff that you don’t like.
You’re right I’m not really a huge investor or scalper or anything like that. I’ve loved the games and cards since I was a kid but lost all my collections throughout moving so many times, growing up. I really enjoy the artwork and reminds me of some good family times growing up. That is the source of the love of collecting these. On the other hand, I bought a shiny Mew ex SAR the other day the day before it released from Japan… and it’s got me hyped. I’m currently awaiting it in the mail and thinking of getting more of them. It is truly good art that I enjoy on these cards.
Lol, no one knows the answer to this question and if they did then they probably wouldn’t tell you.
It’s much more fulfilling to narrow your interests and start buying cards you actually enjoy. What’s your favourite pokemon? Favorite set? Favorite promos? Find out what you enjoy and check their prices to see if they fit your budget.
If you really don’t want to do that, then there is a little contest happening here on e4. Check out this thread for ideas.
Welcome @Spyder to the forum, and welcome back to the collecting hobby, very lovely to have you onboard. This place is a really great resource and knowledge base for all things Pokemon card collecting. I hope we can get to know you a lot more as the days go on.
If you are looking for Japanese promos, the two threads above should get you started. I hope this can really take you back to what collecting was in your childhood and you will probably find something interesting to pick up.
Hope you have a great time here and will see you around.
Just buy minty old back Japanese Set Shiny’s. You cant go wrong and they are normally very very cheap. You might get lucky with a minty copy which is graded PSA 10.
Well, i was thinking of going after a few less sought after cards that are still first edition and hoping to get a wider variety of conditions at a lower price and lets say buy a page of those copies a month. It is true promos will be gone and valuable and base set is nice but i think to try to go after some of those lost gems throughout the sets and make a really cool looking art collage out of a binder with them or something similar. Thanks for the welcome its good to be here
Listen to what @Dyl says @Spyder. As someone who bought a card for the stonk it’s not fun. I ended up not liking the card and would only focus on if value went up or down. Sold it and now I collect what I like
Welcome here, @Spyder! Always nice to see a new face! It sounds like you’re starting to hone in on what might be most fun for you and I think that’s exactly the path to take! I find the more passionate I am about a collecting goal, the more rewarding it is and I always learn more while pursuing that goal! There are a lot of underrated Japanese set cards for sure! There are also some that are exclusive to Japanese, so that could be fun to discover! It’s also worth noting that for some sets unlimited is much rarer, so something to keep in mind if rarity matters to you.
Masaki promos are good to collect. Always in demand and desirable with a unique/limited release. Vending series and VS cards are also really cool. All the GB promos and Pokemon Center & Pikachu promos are great IMO. Over the past while I collected several pre-2020 Pikachu promos and I like them a lot. There’s honestly a lot to go for in Japanese, but as others have mentioned it would be good to collect what you like as well and not just speculate on investment prospects. In my experience if it’s a card you like, there’s a good chance others like it as well
Investments - S&P 500 or mutual funds
Collection - collect what YOU enjoy. This could all go to zero someday and if you are left with cards you enjoy, it doesn’t matter.
Japanese old back holos (Base → Neo especially) in PSA 8-9 grades are insane value right now. You could rack up quite a collection with that budget by buying PSA 8s on auction (I suggest checking PWCC for these as well as Ebay) and cracking them for your binder.
Will they go up a ton in the future? Who knows, but in terms of building a nice japanese collection on a budget, it’s a solid start in my opinion!
Would definitely suggest someone who is cute, fun and shares common interests. Harajuku and Shibuya are good locations for hooking up. You can then swing by Yoyogi Park for a dat-
