I love these unique early illustrations. The poor staryu, victreebel, and slowpoke all look great even when losing their battles. The pichu facing lugia is amazing. Wish this kind of stuff was more available.

Poor Slowpoke, really makes you wonder how much unused art we have never seen.

Hope that’s not Gen I freeze on ol’ slowbro there

Hoping some of you walking encyclopaedias can help. Has there ever been a card art that features Pokémon playing the TCG? Kind of breaking the fourth wall, because this drawing is awesome:

Judging by the players and not onlookers, its actually strip poker.

A colored version exists somewhere. I recall seeing it in a book.

Definitely from a different time! RIP Staryu :frowning:

I actually really love this artwork that makes you feel weird.

Regarding card art featuring cards, all that comes to mind for me are the expansion sheets from the vending series.

Even pikachu is handling some old backs in these sketches.

It’s really cool to see artists play around with this concept though, because maybe there is an unofficial reason why they have not ever done this for card art.

Found it. Comes from Volume 2 of I Know Pokemon Cards [please someone correct my horrendous translation]. It even showcases Ooyama and Yuka Morii:

It’s already growing back in the illustration right under!

The festival drawing is so cute–with the Voltorb and Electrode about to explode to provide some fireworks. It would look great as a postcard!
