soooo can everyone pull out their base set onyx and spell the name you see at the top because apparently it’s always been onix with an I instead of a y…lol that was weird for me to discover because all my onix cards sure enough are spelt with an I
but if you would have asked me this yesterday i would have bet my life savings its a y easy… onyx just looks and feels right, I believe the y stood out to me as a kid being a unique way to spell that name … onix just seems unfamiliar and wrong … anyone else??
There are a lot of original Pokémon whose names closely resemble words which somewhat relate to them like Onix (onyx), Jynx (jinx), Muk (muck), Gastly (ghastly), Drowzee (drowsy), Koffing (coughing), Weezing (wheezing), Pinsir (pincer), Seel (seal) and Magmar (magma).
Along with those there are others which share no resemblance to the Pokémon like Cloyster (cloister) and Exeggcute (execute). There are then some Pokémon whose names exactly match the words which relate to them like Golem, Haunter, Scyther and Ditto. Finally there are those which share no resemblance like Persian and Mew.
I’m sure I’ve missed some, too.
Because of all this similarity I think it makes sense to end up wrongly associating the spelling of a Pokémon’s name with the word it’s similar to or vice-versa.
