So apparently Master P is now part of the grading world. The new company know as AGS uses technology promoting 99.9% grading accuracy. Check out this article and HILARIOUS shot at PSA. The future is now haha.
What does it even mean to have “99.9% grading accuracy?” How is that even something that can be measured? And I’d also be curious to know how the AI deals with factory damage (i.e., silvering on Jungle holos) or surface damage. I think that an AI could be useful for assessing centering, but I don’t see how it could assess a card’s overall condition without any human oversight.
Also, the whole celebrity promotion thing is just cheesy. It adds zero credibility. It makes sense when you’re advertising a new movie or mobile app, but not a grading company.
My only exposure to Master P is that one time he was the guest celebrity on a WCW PPV in 1999(?). He was in some feud with Curt Hennig (Mr. Perfect) over Rap vs Country music.
I’ve not watched the video but I like the idea that grading companies are moving towards automated solutions. Even if this one doesn’t take off, the next one might, and the more of them which pop up the more pressure existing grading companies will face to follow suit.
I’m with you here. Automated grading (or even human assisted grading) is a non-trivial computer vision problem though. I don’t have nearly enough faith in older companies (PSA, BGS, SGC) or the leadership of new companies (like this shining example here) to be able to implement something that works effectively.
makes me laugh that they take a dig at PSA’s prices, mention how they are way faster at grading etc etc, but still charge the $20 a card price that had people up in arms only a few months ago. Sure they state a faster turn around time, but how long would that last if they actually get popular?
