Matchprint Cards

I’m hoping one day to obtain a copy of the Diglett and Dugtrio Matchprint cards, but I have no idea if they’re even within my reach.

Does anyone (possibly those that have dealt with Matchprints) have any sales data they can divulge. I assume prices are all over the place with the starters and Pikachu commanding much higher prices, but any type of data of any Matchprints that would help me even to begin to get an idea of what I’m getting into would be much appreciated. Cheers!

@thecharizardauthorty used to own all of the Matchprint cards and made that video on YouTube that I linked in the Diglett/Dugtrio lists I’ve made for you. Perhaps he still has a Diglett and Dugtrio left he’s willing to sell to you for the right price?

Both the Charizard sold for 1k USD each early-2017 and I bought the Pikachu for 1k USD as well soon after in mid-2017. At the time I saw a few Matchprint cards for sale on eBay that were already in other people’s hands than Rusty, which were available for roughly 600-1400 USD each. None of them sold for a very long time, though. And no idea what they eventually went for.

In the current market I haven’t seen one being sold for a very long time. With roughly two copies each in existence, a lot of them stay with the collectors that initially bought them. The two Pikachu MATCHPRINT cards in my and Justin’s hands won’t go anywhere anytime soon for example (sorry to all other Pikachu collectors out there).

Anyway, if Rusty doesn’t have the Diglett/Dugtrio anymore and all four copies are in collector’s hands, then best of luck finding them in the first place, and best of luck being able to make an offer that will convince the current owners to sell them.

PS: I personally see errors and these Sample prints as nice-to-haves in my collections. So if you manage to find all the other Diglett/Dugtrio cards except for the MATCHPRINT cards eventually, I think you can still deem it a complete collection at that point. I’m missing a couple of Sample Pikachu cards myself that have only emerged once or even never after they were revealed, and although I’d love to add them at some point, I deem them as nice-to-haves for my collection goals.

I contacted TCA not too long after I saw the video you linked in the initial list. Unfortunately, he sold off the moles (probably in a bulk deal with several others) too far back that we was not able to find receipts or any transaction documentation of who/where they went to.

I figure it wouldn’t hurt to get a head start on asking around and getting my name out there that I’m after the moles. I have heard some of the more popular ones have *recently* gone for sub-1000, but it’s such a niche card of a niche Pokemon so it’s a bit difficult to get an idea of what it would go for.

I had two, a Typhlosion and a Mary’s Impulse. While I think they are neat, I had primarily bought them in case I found someone who had Chansey and wanted to swap, since I figured Typhlosion was popular. After a year it seemed more likely that either a Chansey would not appear, or if it appeared it would be better to have a cash offer than to hope to trade. I sold them a few months ago, the Typhlosion for $2,000 and the Mary’s Impulse for $800. I imagine Diglett and Dugtrio would be around $1,000 - $1,500 each, but as you say it’s super niche. I made a deal within the sale to ensure the Typhlosion would eventually end up with a Typhlosion collector when they could afford it.

Also worth noting imo just so you’re aware, @pichufan made a post last year detailing how one could replicate matchprint cards if not exactly, then extremely closely. Personally, I would never buy one if it weren’t from TCA directly because of this and the climate of fakes in the current era. Granted, matchprints are extremely niche for the vast majority of the Pokemon world and therefore are less likely to be reproduced, but this is just how I feel.

I bought the Pichu, Pikachu, and Raichu card in 2015 from an E4 user who got them from TCA Gaming originally. I still have the Pikachu, but have sold the Pichu and Raichu. Can’t help you with the whereabouts of what you’re after, but I did want to say that the individual who purchased the Pichu/Raichu from me paid a significant amount (more than other users have outlined here for other sales) and is working to collect a complete set, less the Pikachu at this stage (not letting that go haha).

@qwachansey, Thank you for disclosing that information. Definitely helps gives me an idea of what to expect when it comes to pricing. I know with stuff like this, the go-to statement is always “it depends on the seller” but even a wide range is better than nothing.

@nish, I actually stumbled across that thread shortly after I found out about the existence of the matchprints. After reading through that thread, I also had my reservations on continuing to pursue the matchprints, but I figure as long as I prioritize provenance over everything else, I should be fine. At the end of the day, if I’m comfortable with the transaction (if there ever is one) that’s all that matters.

@justinator, I sent you a DM in regards to your contact(s).
