What in your opinion are the most iconic Pokémon cards in both English and Japanese?
What are you top 5-10? Can be vintage, modern, trophy or a common card that everyone just recognizes. Doesn’t have to be the most expensive. Just cards that come to mind when you think of Pokémon cards
Base thru Neo vintage chase cards are up there for sure, as posted above already. I’d say some of the Japanese trophy types and other promos (Unikarp, etc) have become much more recognizable due to the increased media attention, but they’re not quite as recognizable yet as say Base Set Charizard or similar.
Another honorable mention to me would be the Black Star promos on the English side. With modern you also have Extra Battle Day Lillie on the Japanese side and other promo types like the Poncho Pikachu’s growing in popularity a lot. I think over time they could become ‘iconic’ in the hobby as a whole.
Kind of surprised no one has said this yet , I see anything after wotc and think this card
Also for me anything starting from Neo Genesis - Neo Rev is hugely iconic too me since those were around the time I could actually buy my own packs with allowance anything before that was please mum please dad lol
i’d say these three are the 3 most recognizable cards that nearly everyone who has seen a pokemon card has seen (*edit: who were around during the original era or at least has been familiar with pokemon cards since then)
as an adult, this entire era is so incredibly boring. i’ve been so caught up in the constant news cycle of new sets, when i think of pokemon cards, i think of whats coming out next.
Eh, to people who are engaged in the hobby, yes, Rayquaza Gold Star is one of the top set cards, but I certainly wouldn’t say it’s a “recognizable” card to casuals. If you go and ask the average person who collected cards as a kid and no longer does as an adult, most of them aren’t going to recognize the Rayquaza. They’re going to think of something like Base Set Charizard.
Most people wouldn’t immediately think of anything past early WOTC. Not all of course, but most.
I think @inertgeometry is on the money with the three cards they picked.
Fair enough , I guess Lugia from Neo would be the top banana too given the movie most of us saw when we were little , then the new promo card would also be a top contender
If we go by general public, then neo cards are not the most recognizable cards in the hobby and definitely not any trophy. For collectors yes, for the general public no. I would end at fossil at best and more realistically just put base.
I would say:
Base Charizard (any variant)
Base Blastoise (any variant)
Base Venusaur (any variant)
Base Pikachu (any variant)
Base Machamp (any variant) (not that Machamp is popular, just seems that everyone had this card).
Umbreon moon may very well #5 already based on the popularity post 2020.
From a collectors stand point, I would still say the starting 3 are still most iconic. Maybe not the most desirable.
