Most Undervalued Vintage Japanese Promo Card under $500

Hello Everyone,

What do you think is the most undervalued vintage Japanese Promo card under $500 that could see a moonshot in the future?

Promos like PLAY campaign, Art Academy, design contests and trophies (e.g. Snap Cards, Battle Road and Winter Challenge Prizes).

Thanks

Welcome to e4, @Poke3!

Almost all of these are not <$500. If they are <$500 (e.g., some PLAY promos), they are unlikely to go to the moon.

If I am being honest, I don’t expect any Japanese promo <$500 to go to the moon. Most high-end Japanese promos valued at thousands of dollars have room to grow. The ones <$500 have already climbed quite a lot in the past 5 years and are unlikely to randomly shoot into space.

My recommendation would be to buy what you like, not what you think will earn you a return in the future. Life is too short to buy cards that you don’t like for a slim chance at a massive return.

These types of questions don’t have a definite answer, because you are just asking people to speculate for you instead of just speculating yourself. I can come up with like 3-4 cards off the top of my head that I think have a good chance of seeing steady but strong increase in value over the next 10 years, but I gatekeep my speculation and would hazard to guess that waiting 10 years is about 12 years longer than most people want to wait.

If you buy cards with the expectation/hope that they ‘moonshot’ then I feel bad for you, it’s a surefire way to guarantee negative emotions and outcomes for yourself.

any psa 10 that you can find for that price id imagine would be undervalued. otherwise it is probably all 8s and 9s and that sounds like a lot of work to figure out.

To be honest, if a card “survived” the pandemic and the modern Japanese bubble without exploding in price, is hard to believe that is ready to moonshot.
For doing so, it would require another radical change in collectors interest/taste or popularity, considering that people today have all the resources to know about these cards.

When something is appealing to many collectors you clearly see the effect: masaki gengar, karen’s umbreon, play mew ex, shining mew, and so on.

I don’t think anything DP era is “moonshotting” but Meiji promos are underrated for sure.

Finding them sealed is one thing, but finding them mint is another. Most are sub pop 5!

I also think this one is pretty cheap for what it is

If that moves from $200 now to $300 in the future I’d consider it a massive victory. It’s a beauty, and scarce, but too niche

I love the Japanese Victory Medal promos. 05 and 06 golds are quite pricey, but most of the others are easily obtainable for under $100 raw, and PSA 10s for $100-500

Not to be funny or disrespectful, but this comes off as a how do I stonk?/what should i buy? Especially given that most of the cards you listed are worth more than $500.

Exactly my point tbh.

In the end, the chance of anything from this era shooting up in price is extremely slim

Red Pikachu PSA 10 is pretty underrated imo
