My First PSA 9 Purchase

Hi All,

I’m new here to the forum.

I received my first PSA slab recently which is a PSA 9 Blastoise from the 1999 Base Set.

I was quite surprised by how much a 9 can get away with but it might just be because I’m really fussy. There is minor specs of whitening on the back, a very faint mark near the edge of the bottom right on the back and does seem to be some light holo scratching and very minor silvering on the right border on the front. Is this pretty normal for a 9?

Also, is there an easy way to tell what scratches are on the card and which are on the case? Seems hard to tell sometimes. Is there any risk in trying to clean the case?

Thanks!

If you’re looking to clean a case use plastx

I am a total noob at this but I would assume that any visible scratch would be on the case if we’re talking about a PSA 9. Congrats on your card btw!

There are plenty of nines that may not have the best condition because grading is subjective. I have tens that look like eights and even one with a dent. Sometimes it slips past the grader and sometimes they aren’t having a good day. If you don’t agree with a grade, then you can send the card back to PSA to review. Occasionally, they will lower the grade and send you the difference between the new grade and the old one, but they will most likely just send the card back saying it is graded properly. As @kingboo64 said, plastx is great for cleaning cases. It may take a little while to buff out larger scratches, but it will get the job done.

Buy the card and not the grade.

There are 9s that look like 10s and 9s that look like 8s

Generally 9s can have 1 major flaw and a few minor flaws. A 10 should only have minor flaws that are hard to see.

Normal for a PSA 9, just enjoy the great card. Congrats.

Your card sounds like the most normal 9 to me.

Thank you all for the replies and the congrats, much appreciated.

Sounds like I may be over worrying, I think I just expected slightly more on a PSA 9 card but I’m hoping that this PlastX stuff removes a lot of the scratches that I think may be on the holo.

I’m not planning on selling this card but out of interest - what do you guys think will happen to the prices of cards over the next year or so? Do you think they will inevitably dip once the cards start coming back from PSA?

Thanks!

I smiled when I saw this. Like watching a young baby deer learning how to walk.
