Hey! I’ve been lurking the old forum for a while but with the new site I thought I’d finally share something! I mainly collect black Star promos up to XY plus a few other sets including; Pop series, southern Island, toys r us and Fast food promos.
I try to get each variation of a card e.g. If it was officially released with a different holo pattern, though I try to stay away from error cards (maybe that’ll be what I go for in the future!?). Also lately I’ve gotten into collecting a sealed version, where possible, if it came in a single sealed pack.
There are a few cards missing but I’m in no rush to complete my sets, Its been a long and enjoyable journey!
I’d imagine pop series would be a pain to put together these days. A lot of them you only see come up for sale once every few months e.g. non holo Jolteon, Vaporeon and Flareon from pop series 3, holo versions there are millions of them!
@pfm I know the BW promos can be a pain too. The Landorus 79, Lucario 85, and Genesect 86 are all rare finds hardly popping up on eBay from what I’ve seen. Congrats @Guts, I love to see all those BW promos!
@stagecoach
enigma is right, a lot of the black & white promos have been a pain to get! 3 cards that I’m still missing from the set BW14, 15 and 16; Pansage, Pidove and Axew. I remember these cards were always available but just super expensive, even back then, so I never bought them. Fast forward a few years and they’re next to impossible to find but when they do appear are even more expensive.
This prompts the next question — what are the most expensive cards you’ve locked down and the ones you still need?
I’ve considered this kind of collection before but decided to focus on WotC vintage instead, so I’m really interested in your experience. You’re kinda walking the path I didn’t take.
@stagecoach With promo cards like these there isn’t really any super expensive individual cards, obviously you have Umbreon and Espeon from the Pop series and maybe Championship Arena Black Star and a few others.
The real value comes because most cards are worth more on average than a lot of other sets, generally speaking £5 to £100 and there are so many of them!
As for my most valuable, I have no idea I did pick up a sealed Kyogre 001 K-zone from the Nintendo black Star set a few months ago, those are super rare to come by, I don’t think many people even know it exists!
