So I’ve just recently reignited my love of Pokémon cards after finding all my old vintage holos/cards and while I’m in the process of completing needs in those sets (all WOTC), I was curious what a fun modern set would be to get a few packs/boxes that wouldn’t break the bank.
When I say modern, I really mean in the last like 4-5 years as I think those boxes might not be as wildly expensive?
So yeah, looking for some sets people might think is fun to collect that would help me narrow down a few to target as there are sooo many sets out there now. Doesn’t have to be “value” based or anything and I loved all the Pokémon games up to this point so I’m not looking for series specific. Name away!
Unified Minds
Dragonite, Mew/MewTwo tagteams (one of the best cards ever for play), Raichu/Alohan Raichu, Garchomp, Viridian Forest…
The Pikachu is really happy
I am not too far away from a master set of it…well not to far for a 236 card set lol. Probably will buy the rest as single cards though
I’d say Hidden Fates as well if you really want to open. Beautiful pack art and not expensive yet with good potential in the future. Smarter to buy the cards in singles tho. Just throwing that out there before you get addicted to opening and keep getting bad pulls and repeats. Even if you pull shiny charizard on your very first pack you will spend over 5k opening packs to complete the set. Way cheaper to just buy in singles or as a set off someone. Not as fun but much more rewarding to me. But it’s whatever you want to do im just stating the smart route. Ask others that completed the set how much they spent on opening hidden fates. It gets out of hand fast
Primal Clash and Roaring Skies are probably my favorite modern sets. Everything is so beautiful in there, the full arts are wonderful, the ancient trait artwork was super exciting, and they’re the closest you can get to the original EX Series sets in the modern day. Because of all the reprint stuff you can still pick up the boxes for less than $100 close to 4-5 years after release.
If that’s not a recipe for an amazing modern set I don’t know what is!
In no particular order cosmic eclipse, shining legends, evolutions particularly in Japanese, Japanese pokekyun.
And maybe hidden fates, I’m kind of up and down on it. The Japanese version is borderline too big and the English version is definitely overly cluttered with all the extras added on. Plus the full art shiny cards are not as nice as the regular hand drawn shiny cards.
If HGSS falls into modern then that is my number 1. Ancient origins gets an honourable mention.
Most of the sun and moon sets are actually really good, I just think they have wayyyyy too many cards and rainbow rares.
Ultra Shiny GX is around when I came back into the hobby and I went crazy buying those boxes along with double blaze and tag bolt…it was alot of fun times
Cosmic eclipse by far. So many wholesome artworks.
Tag team of all kanto starters, creation trio tag team with an amazing secret rare art, the cards featuring trainers with their signature pokemon, and finally we got mega lopunny in the tcg teamed up with puff nonetheless.
To reignite modern sets: XY Evolutions is the closest to the original cards although I absolute hate the reverse holos, Shining Legends, and Ultra Shiny GX(J)/Hidden Fates(E) is a must.
My favorite sets from the last few years are Primal Clash, Roaring Skies and Ancient Origins. All sets have great cards (and of course one factor is them all containing cards of my favorite Pokemon) and I also loved the “Ancient Trait” cards where the art had a full art kind of vibe, but they were all your regular common / uncommon / rare / holo cards.
Shining Legends and Hidden Fates were nice too. And I also like Celestial Storm for being Rayquaza focused.
Oh and Dragon Majesty of course! Because, you know, dragons…
