Need advice on collecting the base set!

Bad news guys  , i’ve suddenly had a hunkering to buy the base set after I got a base set new unopened booster pack before xD And you guys know how prone I am to bad decisions so I thought i’d ask for advice first.

To my understanding there’s 5 versions of the base sets? 1st edition, Shadowless, Unlimited, Japanese & 1999-2000 (uk only). What i’m looking for is the cheapest one to collect. I’m not bothered about rarity from a collectors standard so I want to opt for the most printed packs/cheapest.

I do however want to buy unopened booster packs and i’m aware alot of the original base packs could be weighed as the holographic cards were slightly heavier. Someone before sent me a link to an ebay listing that alot of members have claimed were unweighted (seller didn’t realise) but looking at that cost they’re like $80.

To be fair, collecting a new UNOPENED base set booster pack is going to set me back alot of money so i’m leaning towards possible pre owned cards (I just want the base set for nostalgic purposes). To clarify my questions to you guys are:

  • Which base set is the easiest to complete?
  • Which base set is the cheapest to buy?
  • Do you guys recommend buying unopened booster packs or pre-owned individuals for cost reasons? (if the cost differs massively i’ll consider reasonable quality pre owned cards)
  • Anything else you’d like to make me aware of.

Thanks for the help!

Base set 2 is not Base set it is an entirely different set

Thanks! Amended :stuck_out_tongue:

I wouldn’t try to complete a base set by opening boosters, just buy the singles and you’ll save a heap of cash. You’d want to get unlimited, it’s the cheapest for packs and cards.

Unlimited is the cheapest like Pierce has said and dont open packs; they cost significantly more than their singles counterpart.

Another possibility, if you do not care of aesthetics is to replace some of the more expensive holos, such as the unlimited charizard with a base set 2 charizard. It’s cheaper, but it would not be the same set and it will ruin the aesthetics a bit. However, some of the price differences is enough for you to consider that!

Good luck!

Just buy an unlimited complete binder off ebay. Boom. You’re done for like 150-300 bucks.

Heck, collect a full Fossil set in NM for $150 while you’re at it: www.ebay.com/itm/Pokemon-Fossil-Complete-Set-Unlimited-62-62-Near-Mint-Condition/292534462399?hash=item441c69a7bf:g:9owAAOSwQRla3S-0

^^^^ I agree. Just buy the set and you’ll be done. Unlimited base set is by far the best option to complete the set. All the other sets are too expensive if you are on a budget.

There are more than 5 base sets, however that would be going into multiple different languages etc. However I do think it’s important to note that the Japanese base set has two variants - the unlimited, and the no rarity! English has four IIRC - 1st ed, shadowless, unlimited & fourth print.
GL!

a holo set of unlimited base in psa 9 is around $700, less than a third of what it costs to acquire the box.

Ray we already discussed this in one of your other threads. Even if you had a big budget, we’re talking $2500 booster boxes here. You would need at least 2 just to complete the set, I would strongly advise against doing something like this.

Lets say you get lucky and come across unweighed packs. You pull some random holo that is PSA 9 worthy. It’s worth less than half the price of the pack. lol

Like Chris B said, you can get the full set for less than $300 which is a really good deal. Actually, even buying all holos in PSA 10 would probably be cheaper than opening packs.

Thanks guys for all the advice. I thought I made an old thread but wasn’t sure. Should probably of checked first. @ditto that’s an interesting idea. I did notice alot of the same cards crossed over in base set 2.

How is this so cheap? Is the fossil set not rare? It’s the third oldest set o.o I’m wary when I see full sets that cheap which are so old.

Pokemon was extremely popular when Fossil came out, so a bazillion cards were printed to meet demand, they’re definitely not what most would consider rare

That’s awesome! An old set that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. I compared a few listings and that’s a pretty good quality listing thanks @chrisbalestra . I think i might wait until I sell some stuff so I have the money for it.

Yeah dude good luck. The one I posted had some quality photos of the back of the cards. Everything looked pretty NM to me so its prob a solid grab. One thing I’ve learned about binders is, there will always be more… at least for the next few years.

You know what i’ve noticed. If i want a reasonable quality card, i’m gonna have to dig for it xD Alot of them are pretty old and damaged. I’m gonna take my time and go for bargins with good quality. But god help me when it comes to the holos o.o

If it is unlimited base set, you still have a good chance of finding lot of NM cards. The holos obviously would be bit more expensive NM quality! But take your time and enjoy the process and journey of collecting!

Yep! I’m having a great time collecting. It’s delicious xD If you’re patient and have a keen eye you can get some mint quality cards for really cheap. I’m just doing the unlimited set because it’s cheaper.

If there are more expensive cards/sets that you want and are within your price range, I’d recommend focusing on them first. If unlimited base set is going to be your focus, try to go for the Charizard first (assuming you plan on getting it) as it will increase in price the fastest.

Oh really? That’s interesting. I guess the older it becomes, the less of them are in circulation. Good advice. Charizard has been on my mind lol
