I saw a topic brought up here a few months back about this card on whether it was a fake or not? Was up for debates. I happen to be a giant Lugia fan and had only just recently starting collecting again after seeing a coworker with a aquapolis lugia, knowing I needed this card I dove right into collecting Lugia cards and buying booster boxes. But point being here, ran into a guy on instagram unsure if he wanted to sell but was open for offers. I wanted to know if this was a legit card of a misprint or as I think i read as a theory its just bleed through of the holo underneath( But my only question in it being so is wouldn’t the card itself be in bad condition to even do so; Or at least be visible damage? If it not a misprint?). So the TL;DR is this truly a real card and a misprint? and What would a reasonable price be? Hoping I can get a fast reply by days end so I’m not leaving the guy hanging in texts. Thanks in advance
The Lugia looks legit to me. We’ve run across a few other cards like this in the past. I actually have a few random holos that have the foil starlike pattern showing aswell. I remember a Dark Blastoise Holo like this aswell that someone asked about a few months ago. A factory error. Is it worth getting? Hell yeah. Is it worth a ton? Probably not.
The guys has shot down others offers but hasn’t stated what he was offered, he was shooting his ballpark in the $150; Was already obscene to me which had me scurrying about the internet trying to learn about this card and if that was a justifiable price drop. Yet nothing was to be found on this card except one post, but had nothing to really offer to what I was looking for as an answer. I see this card ranging from 5$-60$ depending on card quality of course and 1st editions, yet again of course. I personally seeing that didn’t see myself pushing past $100, but still began debating if that was even worth it and being new to all this again wanted opinions before I made a wrong decision or a right one to add to my Lugia Collection.
If i’m correct, I think Secret Wonders did this on purpose. That’s why I didn’t bring it up about that set. Anyone, know for a fact if it was intentional or not on the Secret Wonders holos?
In my experience, I see this more often with Japanese cards. Then again, I typically purchase more japanese than English.
However, this is certainly not a unique error, and definitely not a quantifiable one. There are plenty of cards that have this same “error” but go unnoticed. I am sure if I went through all of my bulk I could find a handful that have the holo showing through the text area. In fact, I just grabbed a stack I had sitting next to me, and the japanese arcanine town with no map has subtle holo in the text.
If you are someone who does value this sort of thing, the price point is your call.
Yeah this is definitely more of a thing with older Japanese cards. You don’t actually get the full rainbow holographic effect but you can see the holo pattern showing through on the printed part of the card nine times out of ten. Interestingly enough though, those hairline scratches that go through to the silver foil that you commonly see on old English holos seem to be much less prevalent on their Japanese counterparts; as a matter of fact I’ve tried to strip a damaged Japanese card down to a blank holo to no avail.
