New Card Corners

Hey everyone,

I’ve opened up some packs from newer sets (S&S, Burning Shadows, Evolutions, etc.) and noticed that a lot of the bulk cards have these weird corner “lips” to them. I’m not really sure how to describe it as I don’t think its a bend or a crease or ding. Just maybe the way these cards were cut? Sometimes all 4 corners show this and other times only 1 or 2 but most (if not all) have it on some of the corners.

Is this just the way some of the cards were cut from my boxes and packs? Is this common across everyone’s stuff? Would PSA see this a dinged corner when grading cause it definitely catches your eye when tilted in the right light?

I have noticed this aswell and wondered the same.

During the manufacturing process cards are cut into rectangles then the corners are cut off. Sometimes you see a fold or pushed out lip on the sides of the card as well. This is probably just due to the sharpness and pressure of the blades.

It likely does not hurt the grade on a card but would certainly make those corners more susceptible to damage.

Some of the ultra rares from the newer sets are cut in a way that it pretty much removes any chance for whitening since the border is sort of pressed down. (The opposite of what you have there)

This is common in Pokemon, Yugioh cards are squared cornered and rarely have this problem. Like @rattlebear , said its because it gets double cut and the condition of the blades.

Very common

Ok very common on new sets. Figured that.

Was this also very common on WOTC and EX era sets?

Then has anyone noticed/paid attention to any impact on grading when the cards are cut like this? To me it doesn’t seem like damage or should hurt the grade but would like some experience to back up that idea.

I’m in the same boat you are, I planned on grading all the character arts from Cosmic Eclipse but most of the copies have the same issues with the corners as yours.
