So the reservaion for the new set at te pokemon center is already sold out in 1day for the special set box and 2/3 days for the regular box. I’m sure they’ll reprint the regular box in another wave, but that’s the first time I’ve seen it happen for a regular set box :l
Granted, this is just an assumption on my part - but I’d be surprised if the amount of mass sell out wasn’t due to the influx of American buyers hoarding stock.
Hopefully, like most things, there will be a reprint but doubtful when it comes to these special sets which are inherently limited most of the time.
@smpratte , you might be right in the end. Though I think nowadays it’s about the general “feel” of what it’s like to collect Pokemon. People are understandably burnt out by the craze. And when you see content creators opening not just hundreds, but thousands of packs from new sets, brand new online “stores” opening up during set releases for “pre-orders” of actual “pre-orders”, the occasional statement of “Yeah, I bought like 100 of these.” on different discords/reddit posts, and stores being completely sold out within hours if not minutes at the time of release, it can grate on people and create a particular narrative in our heads.
During those times I just try to turn my computer off and do something else, though I can understand it being difficult for other people to do the same. It’s about perspective. And right now, with a mix of collectors, investors, content creators, scalpers, tourney players, etc. all involved in the hobby, it can feel depriving for the average collector.
Pokemon collecting has become a lot more cut throat then it was a few years ago. Hell, even more so than last year.
Edit: TLDR: The current situation of Pokemon Collecting makes it understandably hard sometimes to be excited for new sets.
Should we not forget that there’s a domestic market too within Japan (what it actually is originally intended for)?
Not only are there more overseas buyers having more interest in Japanese products (we), but domestically too.
The demand is going crazy in Japan too and alot of Japanese people stocking up products where they can via various methods to resell.
Just like alot of ‘flippers’ entering this hobby, it’s the same in Japan. Alot of experienced ‘flippers’ from yes for example sneaker resell scene and you name it.
I’ve never seen a set sell out that hard that’s been named Eevee Heroes. The first pre orders were sold out in mere minutes at bigger retailers.
But I’m not shocked/surprised why that happened either when the sell sheet was published. You would have to really mess up hard if you would ruin this set.
Even casual collectors that are eeveelution fans would want this set and creatures knows that, and they’re aiming for that (it’s on the sell sheet).
I’ll use this post to reiterate my ‘apocalyptic’ prediction that lack of supply in English will drive even more people to Japanese and we will likely reach such critical mass that shortages will end up making Pokemon’s 25th anniversary one to remember and not necessarily for the right reasons.
English market is already bursting at the seams with demand, and significant increases in production are likely to take at least one year.
The path of least resistance for money to flow into after English is Japanese, but Japan doesn’t have the production capacity to cope with further increases in international demand.
If people think the market is unbearable today due to scalpers and can’t get any worse, wait until the organic demand and hype for 25th anniversary product kicks in mid year.
Expect extremely low supply and extremely high prices for 2021 and plan accordingly, or be ready to complain and whine in forums for the next 10 months.
I dind’t want to create another apocalyptic thread. I was simply baffled that the regular set that just came out was already sold out (not too surprised about the special set) when the previous is still available and they’ve announced just a couple of cards for the new set if I’m not wrong.
It will be interesting to see if Japan will increase production for Japan itself just to satisfy the international demand
Regarding the number of people buying from Japan: yep it’s annoying, but it was inevitable, especially after telling people how awesome the products made in Japan are, finally they’ve started to notice it (now let’s see if my japanese collection starts to explode in value )
