New Team Rocket/ WOTC Team Rocket Sets

Hi all,

Just was curious, with the new team rocket set coming out in 2025, and if it is popular, would the WOTC team rocket set see an increase in value?

historically, it is unlikely to see any changes.

also, fwiw, the upcoming set is more likely to be similar to Gym Series’ “Team Rocket’s ____” than the return of dark pokemon

I would say almost definitely no. The 2000 Team Rocket Set is the 6th most graded set by PSA, and there’s nothing really left to explore.

Buy a dozen 1st edition dark charizards and let us know

It’s possible that the new set will temporarily increase interest in Team Rocket and EX Team Rocket Returns, but, in my opinion, it will have almost no appreciable effect at a market level. In other words… no.

Well, if a real new Team Rocket set comes out, and it is any good (it probably will be), then there is a real possibility that people will look at the older cards.

However, I think that the real question is; will Youtubers/streamers mention the older Team Rocket sets when discussing the set. If so, then it will have an effect.

Generally speaking, vintage does not have the same price volatility as modern. People give the annoying “modern” streamers too much credit.

I wouldn´t say they are annoying, although they can be. I also don´t think giving them credit is the right word. I do think they do a lot for the franchise in terms of brining it to a broader public. This has positives and negatives. One thing is just a fact though. They have influence.

No doubt social media is powerful and modern fits in perfectly: it’s new, it’s available, it’s easy. I’d like to see the influencers pump meiji promos

I’ve seen so many different versions of this question asked over the years. Will new pokemon snap raise interest in snap cards? No. Will the return of ex increase old school ex? No. Will detective pikachu raise card prices? No. Will the release of the new game affect card prices? No.

The only time you ever see this type of correlation is through black swan events. Pokemon GO had a modest effect on card prices, but it required the creation of literally the most popular gaming app of all time. Or, the relationship has to be extremely strong. Huge price movement in base set moved Evolutions too, but the art is 1 to 1 and it required base set to become essentially unaffordable to happen.

The only way I really see the TR set realistically moving anything else is if the new set reuses artwork from the vintage set AND the prices become completely unaffordable. For example, if they re-release the Dark Dragonite artwork and it becomes like a $2000 card in PSA 1O, people will look to the older cards as alternatives. But most likely the new set will be novel and prices won’t be unaffordable so any impact on older sets will be negligible

to be pump-able, they’d need to be able to get a lot of them easily so they can benefit from the pump. Thats why modern works so well. Super easy to get, super easy to pump

Yeah, they probably won´t. But if they do, I do think they have the power.

I for one do expect the value of Dark Weezing 14/82 (holo) to go up in value. :slightly_smiling_face:
