Newbie Question - Do Pokemon still print sets in 1st ed?

Hey guys,

Really new to re-collecting Pokemon Cards, and was trying to find out if Pokemon TCG cards are still printed in 1st edition and unlimited? I tried googling but nothing really came up other than Base set 1st editions. If so is there any way to tell with newer sets?

Thanks for all the help and sorry if these are dumb questions.

Nope. Limited to the early sets printed by Wizards of the Coast.

Hey, not stupid at all. They stopped printing first edition cards beginning with Expedition. Neo Destiny was the last English set that had first edition cards.

Here a list of all 1st edition sets per language:

  • English (ā€œEDITIONā€): (Shadowless) Base Set; Jungle; Fossil; Team Rocket; Gym Heroes; Gym Challenge; Neo Genesis; Neo Discovery; Neo Revelation; Neo Destiny
  • German (ā€œEDITIONā€): Base Set; Jungle; Fossil; Team Rocket; Neo Genesis; Neo Discovery; Neo Revelation; Neo Destiny
  • French (ā€œEDITIONā€): Base Set; Jungle; Fossil; Team Rocket; Neo Genesis; Neo Discovery; Neo Revelation; Neo Destiny
  • Italian (ā€œEDIZIONEā€): Base Set; Jungle; Fossil; Team Rocket; Neo Genesis; Neo Discovery; Neo Revelation; Neo Destiny
  • Spanish (ā€œEDICIƓNā€): Base Set (Ā©1999); Base Set (Ā©1999-2000); Jungle; Fossil; Neo Genesis
  • Dutch (ā€œEDITIEā€): Base Set; Jungle; Fossil
  • Portuguese (ā€œEDIƇƃOā€): Base Set; Jungle; Fossil
  • Korean (ā€œEDITIONā€): Base Set
  • Chinese (ā€œEDITIONā€): Base Set
  • Polish: no 1st edition print runs
  • Russian: no 1st edition print runs
  • Thai: no 1st edition print runs
  • Indonesian: no 1st edition print runs

As for Japanese 1st edition print runs:
The first Japanese 1st edition set (apart from the No Rarity Base Set) was the PokĆ©mon VS set, and the last one was the Expansion Pack 20th Anniversary [CP6] (which is XY Evolutions in English) - so there are no 1st edition print runs for the Sun & Moon nor Sword & Shield eras. There are also sets printed only in 1st edition; only in unlimited edition; or for which unlimited edition was extremely short printed and rare. Some info about that can be found at the bottom here.So to answer the question in your title: no, they stopped printing 1st edition sets (in Japanese) since the Sun & Moon era. And in English and other languages theyā€™ve stopped after Neo Destiny in 2002 (and the Base Set 2 and Legendary Collection sets didnā€™t had a 1st edition print run either).

It was a good question!

Now, whereā€™s a petition to get 1st editions printed again?

Iā€™ve got your back

They should never print them again.
It would be nothing but scalping and hoarding. None first editions would be all thatā€™s ever left on the shelves. Kid would never have the chance to pull that awesome card thatā€™s actually worth anything.
First editions are were they belongā€¦retired forever.

Despite not being marked as ā€œ1st Editionā€ some early print runs of sets have much better print quality so they might as well be called that! In the UK at least, the 2nd (and later) print runs of Burning Shadows and Evolutions were much lower quality overall than the first ones.

With Hidden Fates it was the other way around however, since the 2nd print run contained the textured and glossy misprinted versions.

Out of curiosity: where the Burning Shadows and XY Evolution print runs printed on a different type of paper? Or did the first print run just contain more errors than the second, and there isnā€™t really a noticeable difference when you look at individual cards?

It feels like the newest print of Hidden Fates is using the same card as the V Sword and Shield Pokemon & holos, its very noticeable on the half-art Pokemon especially (Eevee, Charmander etc).

With Burning Shadows 2nd run many of the Ultra Rares just had a lot edgewear, PSA7-8 out of the back.
Evolutions the same with also the holos having more raised corners.
They kept the same card for those I think though.

Ah ok, so overall just lower quality for Burning Shadows and XY Evolutions. Thatā€™s unfortunate. I was hoping itā€™s some kind of noticeable difference in card stock, which would mean I could look for another Pikachu variant for my collection. Thanks for the info.

Yeah exactly, these textured misprints Iā€™m indeed aware of. I have the shiny Seviper in regular, textured, and glossy variants in my Seviper collection.

By textured I mean that the ridges used in the holofoil are present on the entire card, and it also has holo bleed in addition to that. Probably caused by an ink layer that is applied too thin.
As for glossy, theyā€™re not as glossy as Japanese Glossy vending/magazine promos, but still clearly different from regular cards. Iā€™ve seen it happen multiple times. The Unbroken Bonds Commons from the Build & Battle prerelease kits were sometimes like this (I own some of these myself, including a Pikachu). Iā€™ve also seen some Shining Legends Uncommons, a Pikachu Libre, and some Hidden Fates Commons that had the same issue.

I donā€™t have a picture of my own cards nearby, but here a picture of a textured and glossy Shuppet from the Hidden Fates - Shiny Vault set to perhaps clarify it a bit more for other people reading this:

(Sorry for going completely off-topic. :slightly_smiling_face: )
