Curious to hear what everyone’s thoughts on the next collectible boom will be.
First there were comics. Then sports cards. Then magic the gathering and then Pokémon after.
I think it will either be Yugioh or video games. But it’s anyone’s guess

Pokemon plushies
Video games already happened in 21.
I feel like youre missing several in-betweens, especially if youre including the likes of mtg.
Video games (at least for some consoles) already boomed. They can still rise in value however the times of really cheap, popular games are mainly over.
I was just going off of popularity and off the top of my head
I did not know that lol
Just check what happened to the retro Super Mario Games. Absurd money was paid.
I feel like Gundam models are still really cheap. Not sure what collectability is like but still a fun and affordable hobby.
True, but gunpla is a very niche hobby. But would be interesting to see.
Yeah. Some big shots with a lot of money tried to force grading video games to become something. But WATA Games was one big inside job pyramid scheme social media hype troll bullshit. Grading their own personal collection games, fluffing up population numbers and all the drama that came with it.
I think the video game boom of especially retro video games died out in 2010-2012.
Honestly, I think we are going to see a big market crash for all collectibles between 2025 and 2030. A lot of the recent boom been created by college students sitting home in covid time with disposable money and a lot of free time. Flushing student loans into things like Pokémon and Magic as an investment vehicle to pay off their loans later on. In the upcoming 5-7 years all these kids will cash out. On top of this the cost of living is going up and up, obtaining a house is almost impossible everywhere in the world and there will just not be enough disposable income left to buy collectibles. Especially not at the rate in which companies like POP! TCPI and Hasbro are pumping out their product.
It’s going to be Bionicle.
Trust me. It’s Bionicle.
If this happens I will literally have my “found my childhood collection of a now sought-after toy in my basement but it’s not worth anything because the condition is too poor” moment lol
That being said the next collectibles boom is clearly going to be modern Pokémon cards with glittery textured girls on them
DUDE…I had to google that name it’s been so long, then I’m flushed with memories. These were so fucking cool.
It’s starting.
My vote also goes to Bionicle! Either that or porcelain thimbles.
Assuming we’re talking about macro-movements like 2020 rather than more temperamental movements like the Waifu craze, then nobody - especially not open-mouthed YouTubers - knows. There’s too many variables that can influence collectible markets. Economic factors, celebrity deaths, influencer crazes, pandemics, “cultural preferences” (iykyk), mainstream media, to name a few, plus future factors that don’t exist today.
Hmm, Beyblades, Troll Dolls and Tamagotchis all come to mind. I thought that Supreme collab with Tamagotchi would kick something off, but I guess it’s all pretty niche.
I think books are going through a bit of a moment, and I could see a renewed interest in historically stable collectables like coins, paper money and documents as a result of what feels like an overall boom in collectables as assets in the last 5 to 10 years.
They’re grading Vinyls now too, and I think Vinyls, sealed VHS and sealed CDs could see a bit of a boom if Vinyls aren’t already.
It’ll probably be Pokemon though, somehow
To answer such question ask yourself:
do millenials have enough free time (in terms of age) to engage an insane boom? Most of us are 35-40-45 years old already. I think pokemon boom of 2020 and video game boom of 2021 is our last hour of shine. We don’t have another 10 years to wait for the next boom. Some millenials will be 50 years old at that point.
the most important - how many remaining types of pop-culture items are reduced in quantity while remaining untouched by the hype? VHS is what comes to mind but VHS strongly connected to the 80s and we already had the boom of that around the time Stranger Things became popular and everybody was talking about VHS and making steelbooks for games in VHS tapes and such stuff.
I think the next boom will be something completely new. There is not that much pop culture stuff that is left unnoticed…
Maybe it will be vintage toys because toys are kinda “meh” these days and they are all expensive compared to 80-90s or collectable items like what Neca does.
But will other generations other than millenials get hyped about that?
Video games are always kinda in the boom since 2020-2021 and it’s INSANE how much Pokemon games cost now. I dare you to search Ebay for a sealed copy of Pokemon Soul Silver…
Basically with each year there is less and less vintage video games and there won’t be any other chance because industry leaning towards digital copies and blablabla. (Limited Run games is more of a niche adult thing)
PPS:
Overall I think Pokemon is a healthy thing to stick around. If it won’t be killed by stupid reasons in the future then different generations are always going to have a connection to Pokemon.
Btw i do collect VHS and those are so cheap at thrift stores in europe. 1-2 euro for a neat plastic case tape. (you can even find mint looking vhs with all booklets inside and even promotional stuff like unused MCdonalds Pizza coupons!! as i did with Disney’s Hercules copy), BUT i noticed that people are utterly uninterested in that because VHS requires a device to be played and preferably a CRT-Tv and CRT-tvs are already in the “boom” because those being used for vintage video games.
You go searching for a CRT-tv and it’s all “for sale! good for SNES!” descriptions for over bloated prices…
CRT-tv had a silent boom. Like I mentioned previously - it’s an item that gets reduced in quantity each year and nobody will be producing new CRT-Tvs any time soon. And there is a market for those (video games and VHS people). So…yeah.
Most hobbies are a money sink not a money source. I think a lot of people forget that. The whole point of making money is to buy the things you want. Just skip trying to chase down whatever the next thing is and just buy what you enjoy in the first place. Life is too short
