Non-TCG Card Appreciation

I know that non-TCG Pokemon cards are somewhat niche, but I’ve always loved them. I particularly like the vintage ones (Bandai Carddass and Topsun cards), as they encapsulate the spirit of Pokemon in its infancy. And some of the cards are really cool!

They’re also some of the first cards ever released (unofficially, I’ve heard that Bandai Carddass series 1 was released sometime in September 1996, a month or so before the Japanese Base Set was released on October 20th, 1996.)

Here are some cool cards from the era:

Anyone else a fan of these cards?

What are some of your favorite non-TCG Pokemon cards?

These two are the best cards of all time, no questions asked.

I also love those anime cards, I dont care what they’re worth.

Bandai did a really good job with their sets to incorporate elements of the game in them. The ‘96 set having the data from the game on the back as well as the information based on availability of the game, and the ‘97 using the Pokémon’s signature more in their attack pose.

‘97 is by far my favorite set, with only vending series challenging, as far as pure artwork goes, and topsun is just a personal favorite for being the first printed card set (I’m not interested in the release date debate). When I was collecting topsun I learned a lot that some people still don’t know about. Really an underrated set as most non tcg cards are.

You need to put some Meiji and nissui cards in that op.

I regularly rotate like 2 or 3 PSA cards I display on my desk, but my PSA 5 000 file stays on there all the time. Like Masaki cards, carddass can look VERY nice even in lower grades because of the edgewear on the back.

They’re worth a lot. Only 5k of each released will do that. But because they’re non tcg they’re not as heavily collected.

Done.

Topps chrome tekno and sparkle cards are spectracular.

I don’t own any myself, but I agree they’re great! I added some of those to the OP too.

These cards are S-tier. Especially 000. That Sugimori art holding the starters is peak. And they aren’t easy to grade!

I love all these cards. I have some of the carddass vending cards. I really like the TOPPs series 1 and 2 cards.

@smpratte I’m sure that PSA 10 Bandai Starters copy I bought 3 months ago will arrive in the mail soon.

Aaaaaaany day now…

I saw these 3 for sale today on ig. Love the colours and will be looking to purchase some raw copies to grade in the near future.
The backs are equally as cool with the kanto maps on them

The ending to this video reminded me of the scream from a boss in a video game called Bloodborne. Look up “Orphan of Kos” from that game - the scream sounds just like it haha.

I used to collect these Topps cards as a kid. I really like the ones with the movie-short scenes. I wasn’t able to get many packs though so my binder pics aren’t very impressive but I still love them haha

^ Last pic is 4 year old me being optimistic that I’m going to complete the Ash face lol

@hyruleguardian , bonus points if you can spot 2 funny Pokemon related Easter Eggs, one is obvious, one is not.

I’m a major fan of the Souls series! I used to make Dark Souls 3 PVP videos and loved my run through with Bloodborne while waiting for the last DLC. I never thought of it, but yeah, I guess it does sound very similar. XD

To get back on subject, I should do a run-through of all my non-TCG collection. I’ll make a few more posts later to share some of my favorites as others have done.

Edit: @gengaranimal, why’d they have to Articuno dirty like that?

Thanks for the fix @cullers,!
@azulryu, Cuno must have done an OJ or something to get stricken from the credits with that banner slap
