I think this will be the talk right now…

A first edition base set sealed booster box just ended with a bid of $54,200 USD… WOW
I understand its the first edition and first booster box ever released, plus its sealed. But how does this happen? Shoulnd a 1ed base booster box go for around 3000+?

I think the buyer is a person who really dosent understand the hobby and just bought the box on a whim.
But my question is now, how does this affect the hobby? I’m thinking that prices will not change because this is just a one time thing… unless a second time happens…

what are your thoughts?

1st edition boxes haven’t been 3000ish in a long time. They have been $15,000+, but this is quite the jump.

How many threads are we going to have about this box???

There is already a thread made for this topic. Boxes haven’t been at 3k for a lonngg time. One hasn’t sold on eBay for over a year I believe. There were multiple people with high bids. This will be the new going rate of this box.

Oh snap, really? damn if there was a thread already I apologize.

A box like that will have many cards that sell for multiple hundreds and probably multiple thousands of dollars.

If you pull a mint charizard from the box you’re already profiting at $3k

Its a box that basically doesnt exist anymore. You can find unlimited boxes easily but try finding an authentic 1st Ed box. Its like comparing a 1st ed psa 10 Charizard to an unlimited one. We all know why the 1st edition one gets a premium.

Sir I hate to tell you this… but you have been transported to the future somehow, you’re no longer in 2010 anymore…

But seriously, you must’ve been out of the hobby for many years if you believe this.

After the psa 10 1st ed zard sold for 20k+ wouldn’t you assume the box is worth more then 3k? lol

If the buyer is up to some shady stuff he can easly make his money back.

Reseal the box, sell it.
Reseal the boosters, sell it.
Grade all the First edition cards, Sell it.

People that do this kind of stuff can outbid all the good people sadly.

Reseals are not uncommon though. And in a free market, resealers can afford to bid more than a genuine investor,

A $54k box is not something you buy to insta flip. It’s a collectors item. I’m not saying there’s not a handful of people out there that would do something shady with it, but I just don’t see it with this. I think it would be a very high risk/low reward kind of thing(10-20% best case scenario).

There’s just too many other ways that guarantee a wayyy higher ROI if you have that kind of cash to throw on Pokemon. Plus in this case it’s so much of a gamble when it comes to the condition of the holos. You might end up with pulls that are less than the $1500 you paid per pack.

Sealed product isn’t supposed to be +EV.

Cant think of a better way to make money in shady town than resealing to be honest. People lose money on opening sealed boxes so the buyer will never open the box. PSA grade the boosters so they will never be opened. Afterwards you just sell the mint cards. That should be over a 100.000 in total I think. It doesnt require a lot of gear or a lot of underground connections. Its easier money than drugs.
