Thought I would share this Article on PSA’s Buy/Sell/Trade forum I stumbled upon. Some good insight at how dead the pokemon scene was in 2002-2006
“Hah, 2002-2006? around 10 years ago, that isn’t that lo-…WAIT” geez, that is…a while ago. Is it from elitefourum as well, or?
Dennis is a genius and has the crystal ball Scott always talks about.
Awaltz isn’t and obviously didn’t.
Apparently, both of Dennis’s balls were crystal
Dennis knew what was coming
Great reachback on this post. Its funny to see the same “Pokemon dropped off and collectors moved onto xyz” sentiment back then as we do today whenever cards dont get boner growth overnight.
No, E4 didn’t come about until ~2009. This is from PSA’s Buy/Sell/Trade Forum that it’s first post about Pokemon was from August 2002.
I was going to make a thread like this one time, but never got around to it. I got some pretty good ones I saved from other sites:
Look at that question, imagine if you could see into the future back then! $700 looks like an absolute steal now.
This is from similar thread but I like the terminology used. “Plain” as opposed to NM, ungraded, raw, etc. Gives a perspective of how much things have changed over time and how much graded cards have had an impact on things.
People just did not take things that serious back then
Amazing haha. Hindsight 2020. @qwachansey would have a kick out of this.
It’s crazy how different prices were back then. I mean back in 2011 I remember buying base set packs off eBay for nothing and just opening them.
This video below from simply unlucky (big Yugioh collector) from 12ish years ago shows him pulling a shadowless charizard and mentioning it being worth over $100. He even pulled a red cheeks Pikachu in the same pack
I’ll use some of my own as an example! Let’s go with the bad first.
-
Here in 2016 I argue that XY Primal Clash boxes will be worth more than Flashfire (lol). In my defense, I did say this was a bold prediction.
-
I argued Burning Shadows wouldn’t increase because there was only one Charizard in it.
-
Not even that old, earlier this year I said waifus and other Japanese cards weren’t in a bubble which was just flat out wrong.
Some good takes:
-
In 2017, I forecasted a significant rise in value for PSA graded cards as a whole, and noted that sealed product would be one of the best performing long-term investments.
-
I argued in September 2019 that we were in a buyer’s market for WOTC and other vintage cards, which would not last long.
-
Again in August 2019, here’s me telling you that if you want to make money, buy a PSA 10 FRLG Charizard ex or PSA 10 1st ed Dark Charizard and don’t touch the PSA 10 Hyper Rare Reshiram & Charizard Tag Team.
Thank you for adding to this Thread! These were great reads
But also is humbling, no one can make the 3-pointer 100% of the time. Not even Kobe.
when you haven’t squandered everything in the “cool years” and are rewarded.
No one could see this coming
Plain in this context here would’ve meant raw mint probably what we’d call psa 9 condition today fun fact I bought a light play condition 1st Ed Base Zard for $15 around this time. Another terminology I miss was * for gold star. So you would write “WTB Charizard*”. We should bring this back!

My rant when I saw EX Team Rocket Returns packs were $6 online
It’s been twelve years and I’m still missing Dark Electrode
That’s the most menacing looking Slowking I have ever seen O_O
The most awesome part of this is that hyruleguardian used to post on this forum, and I’m pretty sure he exited the hobby a couple of years ago after he cashed out, which included selling his PSA 10 1st Edition Base Set Charizard.
Talk about full circle.
Fine wine discovered @gareth
A lot of people sold their collection to build their lives. There were a few users here selling their entire collections between late 2020 and 2021. I’m wondering if they still pay attention to the hobby now or completely left. Hard to imagine being so invested all these years when there was no hype and now leaving. Maybe if you can’t buy your grade or box anymore, you have no interest.

I like the one right after as well:
