Today I was just browsing ebay and found a listing for a PSA 8 Neo Genesis Lugia with only a minute left going fairly cheap. So I panicked, had a quick look at the card, thought it looked fine and put in a bid. I won which I was pretty happy with. The images showed tons of vertical scratches that looked like typical PSA slab scratches to me, but then I properly read the description and saw that it specifically said it was in a “new and unscratched” case. So I messaged the seller and they confirmed the scratches were on the card. Now I fully expect a PSA 8 to have holo scratches, but my 8’s have never had anywhere near this many. It looks like there may even be a small dent on the back but I’m honestly just more interested if this would normally get an 8 even if everything else was perfect.
I have I just been really lucky with my 8’s in the past or is this the exception?

Always hard to tell from a picture, maybe it’s not as bad in real life but given how harsh they grade some cards I’m surprised it got an 8. I have 9s with light scratches and a 7 with two deeper scratches though. Hopefully you got it for a price that reflected those pictures and go through with the transaction

@shinycards Thanks for your input. I think it was a good price for an 8 but I’m really not sure it deserved that 8. It really takes away a lot of the eye appeal to me. I hate to be that guy and have never cancelled an order on a PSA card before but I am considering it. Just going to wait for a couple more opinions before I make a decision though.
Congrats. I purchased a Lugia in the same grade a while back that had similar scratches. I got it back when they were under 1k though so maybe my situation is different. I’m weird and prefer some holo scratching to bad edge wear.

The new psa 8’s are solid. I would argue that they are on par with older 9 certs from a few of my newer grades. Depending on how old the Cert is I would say it’s more than likely on the case.

@mimighster , those scratches look very uniform. They might be factory scratches/print lines. I’ve seen similar scratches on Neo Genesis holos (Yanma and T17 have scratches like that sometimes, but they’re usually horizontal). If PSA viewed the scratches as factory damage, I could understand them giving it an 8. Otherwise, it should definitely bring it down to a 7.
In addition, it’s definitely not right to cancel the purchase. If you end up not wanting the card, just sell it.

@breakingpokemon Thanks, I feel those scratches are lighter and a lot less abundant though. I’d be fine if it looked like that. There’s even a ball of scratches at the bottom middle which can be seen at any angle. Just looks like a white smudge.
@zorloth There may be some factory scratches but there’s definitely some that aren’t. This image shows a ball of scratches at the bottom better. Can be seen from every angle it seems:

I guess I won’t cancel but I wouldn’t feel comfortable selling it on as an 8 either.
