Other online auction Sites. Do people know how money works?

Hey Guys,
I recently found some smaller auction houses online that luckily had some Pokémon cards on there. I thought I was lucky and could get some cards for cheap. But as it turned out people bid like crazy on there and far over what they were worth (not even including the 18 buyers premium on top). I had the feeling they just saw the name Pokémon and thought it must be worth something or researched very poorly.

Did you have similar experiences with other auction sites or was this just an unlucky occurrence?

What website? I wouldn’t trust any company with my paypal or card information unless it’s a known trusted site.

It was a pretty big Site for estate sales. So it was trustworthy. I was just surprised by the other bidders aggressive bidding

I have the same thoughts when it comes to Facebook marketplace to be honest - there seems to be some cheap stuff on there, but then some crazy high wacky stuff. Does anyone use it? I’m worried about sending money to a stranger without guarantee (unless picking up of course!).

Facebook marketplace is like craigslist. You don’t send money, you meet up. There are people that want to ship you stuff, but 99% of them are trying to scam you in one way or another.

Probably jumping on the hype of the unknown. Some people have found gold for estate items or good will finds. Normally this is the case because the people selling the stuff don’t typically know the worth and won’t always take the best photos to show what’s included.

I stay away from places like this as certain sites (shopgoodwill) shill and relist.

This happens quite often for comics on estate auction sites as well. Recognizable books always go for well above fair market based on their condition. Not sure why the aggression lol

I really don’t get why people do this. What are they hoping to get? I mean they have to do at least a little bit of research, right? Otherwise, they’d just throw their money away.

@genchiro, It’s a game for some people. blind or semi-blind auctions are fun for people with money to burn. Goodwill has been mentioned and I have seen some lots go for absurdly high prices for what is actually shown in the pictures. A couple of WOTC holos and shadowless commons in a 3lb binder? Maybe there’s more goodies in there? Maybe a charizard? Maybe it’s shadowless? Maybe there’s multiples in a single sleeve? It’s a thrill to see what you won. Similar to live auctions or storage unit auctions. There is rarely money to be made, but it’s a fun way for millionaires to spend their money.

Watch this clip for about a minute, gives a bit of insight to the auction mentality.

Like for real. This can’t be just because people get a kick out of bidding. (Still a day to go)
