So last night, I was spending some time going through the Pokémon Bible and pages 145-146 caught my attention, especially Ditto for obvious reasons . I am not able to translate the explanation/descriptions on page 145. Where these card ever printed with the GB symbol? I can’t seem to find them anywhere… plus… why are these GB cards on their own page when some of the other ones are with their corresponding Pokémons? Thanks in advance!
None of these came out in the physical TCG with the GB symbol, the legendary bird art was used for phone cards in Japan and fetch a high price, they use the fossil set symbol however and are a tad oversized compared to normal cards:
Tangela and Electrode were given physical releases in Pokemon Web, but those used the e-Reader card format.
I would guess that these cards are all listed separately because a) they were all created exclusively for GB1 and b) the only other cards that were created for GB1 were made into physical cards (Dragonite, with the GB symbol; and Meowth and Venusaur, which also had the GB symbol in Japan but not in English).
Whilst not printed with the GB symbol most of these arts feature in the TCG on cards that do exist, the Tangela and Electrode were printed in web exclusively, the Ninetales art was used for Brock’s Ninetales, Magnemite was used for LT. Surge’s Magnemite, Mew is obviously the one from fossil, the legendary birds are on the phonecards with the Moltres also featuring on the Rocket’s Moltres card. Unfortunately from what I can gather the rest of the cards never made it to the tcg. The reason they are on their own I think is because it’s simply a list of cards featured in the game which, at the time, were all unobtainable.
I think you can also add the Jigglypuff art as Erika’s Jigglypuff and also the Jolteon for Lt. Surge’s Jolteon both from the Gym Sets. Only 5 of those cards seem to have never been printed:
Flareon
Vaporeon
Marowak
Pidegot
Ditto
The art on them looks sick though, especially the Pidgeot which has a “punk rocker” type of look going for it
When I first saw them in my book I said “THE FUCK?!” After some short research I quickly threw away the idea that they existed haha. Would’ve really enjoyed those birds in holo…
I can’t remember the exact details, but another reason why some of these were never printed was due to the fact that their attacks had random effects in the Gameboy game that couldn’t be replicated in a physical TCG.
