Coming from the coins side of things, before COVID a lot of the market for coins were at massive coin shows with hundreds of thousands of coins available. The trend was to go online, but they still existed and were awesome to hit as a collector with some $$$ in your pocket (or in my case sometimes as a dealer). Are there any significant equivalents on the Pokemon side, before COVID or maybe now after COVID as a result of the cards getting more valuable to the point it might be worth it? Is that something to expect for 2021 or 2022?
I wish this was a thing! There are vendors with Pokemon cards at gaming conventions like GenCon, but it’s an afterthought. It would be very cool if there were conventions/shows with a large selection of Pokemon vendors (sort of similar to GPs for MTG, but minus the tournament).
No. The biggest issue is that Pokemon is very protective of their IP so anything at that scale is high-risk. You’d probably have to fold it into a larger and more general CCG event for it to work
Pokemon company has the rights to the brand, images, etc., but I don’t think there’s any way they can prevent people from selling secondhand products.
I think he’s referring to how the event would be branded. If any of Pokemon’s IP is in the title, then they might take issue with it. Like, what it could it possibly be called? They own the rights to pretty much any Pokemon-related word :/.
@seafoamarticuno, what said zorloth is correct. They have sued people before over smaller things so I don’t think it can really happen outside of larger conventions or worlds
That’s interesting, I hadn’t heard about these past lawsuits.
I’m not a lawyer, but it looks like there are some specific no-no’s to avoid attracting TPC lawsuits… Using images of Pokemon in marketing an event, selling merchandise with Pokemon on it, etc.
Having an event called “Vintage Trading Cards Show”, and descriptions/photos/etc of some of the items to be sold (e.g. “vintage Pokemon cards” or “1st edition Venusaur”) shouldn’t legally infringe on TPC’s rights.
But sometimes the point of lawsuits isn’t to actually win but rather for the big guy to scare the little guy from even trying something like this.
Really depends on what vendors come and what the show is, majority are sport cards and majority of the vendors only carry sports cards. It’s always been more of an asking game or side display in the back kind of thing, when I say more and more it’s like from rare to uncommon. I would defiantly recommend checking one out they are pretty fun and I’ve always found things to spend my money on when I’m there.
This is pretty similar in my area too. It’s a “memorabilia” show with mostly sports cards, but there were more trading cards showing up before covid hit
I have been running Pokemon fan days for years. We rent a venue and everybody who want to sell/trade Pokemon items/cards can get a table and chair to use for his/her sales.
It’s fun and only for Pokemon fans. We don’t allow the sale of anything else, only Pokemon.
Most time there are about 25 different sellers and hundreds of visitors.
For my country it’s fine this way and as far as I know we are the only ones who dare to run a Pokemon only event.
Now with Covid around it’s not possible, but when it’s over …
Anyone who doesn’t attend regionals events just to buy/trade is missing out! Every regional event I’ve ever been to since the inclusion of vendors as a standard has been a massive collecting success. They’re not just for players
In 2018 or 2018 there was an event i think in Connecticut where a bunch of people brought collections for sale & display. I would have gone but unfortunately i only heard about it after it happened lol. Apparently it was a hit and a lot of big name collectors were there. You can find videos of it on youtube. I’m sure they’ll do it again in a year or two - at least i hope they do!
