Pokemon Characteristics in Card Art

Do you find the personalities and emotions that Pokemon portray through their TCG card artwork is a true representation of that species? Do you think the illustrations capture their traits like a Cubone’s sadness, a Haunter’s mischief or a Snorlax’s laziness effectively or too much? Are there any specific cards where you feel the artwork could be different in some way to capture a different side to them?

I feel as though these typical Pokemon characteristics are a bit overdone and would quite like to see a completely new side to certain Pokemon species. Surely not every Snorlax is as lazy as the next or maybe one is quite a fussy eater. Maybe a Cubone found a trampoline to play on and feels joy for the first time. What about a Haunter that feels compassion for a child who’s had a nightmare and is crying.

Would you like like to see more or less of new ways a Pokemon could express themselves? Do you think it would be detrimental to the Pokemon’s lore if artists took a new approach?

I’d love to hear your thoughts :pikathink:

I dont have any particular card Id like to reference, but as a fan of all Pokemon THIS is what I think I always look for in the art first. I love the emotions Pokemon give us. Makes them more special to me.

Do you specifically look for the Pokemon species typical expression or do you look for an expression whatever it may be?

I need more attitude from cute pokemon.

We could definitely use more criminal Dugtrio. Angry, on a mission, thugtrio. The kind of Dugtrio you run from.

As opposed to this inferior stuff. Vacant, comic relief, toothless frown.

Just any expression. I think seeing one im not used to like a really happy metagross, or sad happiny really pulls me in since I KNOW how those pokemon should look. Same with seeing an eevee in a battle or a mewtwo taking a nap. Something about it excites me since we dont get enough of it.

Like artwork depicting a cute Sentret instead of being an extremely cautious little critter, is using Sucker Punch against a Ledian in the forests of Johto in a territory feud?

Pretty sure a “low kick” would be hilarious to see

Even from that summary; “Digs large sinkholes in the ground and tries to trap its enemies in them.

Dugtrio is a menace I’d like to see a darker approach for sure!

This is exactly what I enjoy seeing too, Pokemon in a more natural state in their habitat. We all express an array of emotions and I think Pokemon would be no different just the artists dictate essentially how we see them.

I like a lot this cubone art that breaks the character quite well

Speaking of Metagross, this one comes to mind.

Maybe there’s an anime or in-game explanation for this behavior but from a card perspective it’s a completely different take on the otherwise angry and destrustive Metagross.

LOVE that cubone with the cloud shaped like it’s mother.

Reminds me of the land before time too, where the dinosaur shaped cloud leads Littlefoot to the valley. :smiling_face_with_tear:

To me Metagross still looks prety angry, kicking his foot up like a bull while shoving the snow. Definitely has beef with that snowman! Although, Metagross has a *0.5 times weakness to Ice so it’s in no danger if the Snowman tried anything!

This Slowbro sticks out in a good way. He’s underwater, he’s physically active and he’s looking a little more attentive than usual.

Cards that make the pokemon look like it’s ALIVE are my favorite. Some like the wonderful reflections on the Surging SParks Skarmory are great

but I want to see the mon doing something, or living in often some way is far more interesting.

I love see the atrocious Gyarados like the Red’s Gyarados in the Manga Pokémon Adventures. A happy Gyarados like artist Mato bring us early in the saga.

I love how each manga artist draws Gyarados a little differently. Adventures is great, same with the electric tale of pikachu and pocket monsters:
