Hey guys
Whenever things like this are happening I always ask myself will this affect the hobby and increase or sometimes decrease the market value of things.
The movie trailer looks to be good. I would definitely watch it because it looks like it’s a well put together movie. Charizard looks badass as fuck to lol.
Did Pokémon go help the hobby ?
Does anyone have a chart of pricing through out the years ?
I do wonder when and how a card really came to sell for 3-5k a pop.
Pokemon Go was much more important for the franchise than this movie will be.
The movie helps grow everything but the huge movements in prices have already happened. If you’ve been following prices you would have seen consolidation for more sought after cards recently but I can’t imagine prices will skyrocket like they did in 2016.
The way the average person consumes video games is more important than how they consume movies in 2018.
Having been through this many times, including a couple times with Pokémon, movies aren’t a big boost to their related collectibles. This is the best way I can phrase it: Movies are greatly helped by the heath of a hobby/franchise but are only minimally helpful to the health of the franchise they’re based on.
Personally, unless this movie becomes a cult classic/box office hit and wins multiple oscars I feel like it’s definitely a “come-and-go” movie that would feel dated or old a few years later; I think the impact to the collecting community would be negligible.
A quick vote from my group of friends is that most of them are kind of uninterested in the movie, but I guess we’ll see when it airs on how popular it is in the theaters!
Star Wars merchandise printed money even before Disney. Pokemon prints money either way, even if it wasn’t owned by Nintendo. The Detective Pikachu movie will do some short-term boost. Nintendo is smart enough to hand out something to attract everybody to the cinema. Like e.g. a tcg promo, a special Pikachu for the USUM game (or Let’s Go) or… countless possibilities.
I think, YES. The movie will affect the market, but only the market directly related to what Nintendo publishes to attract people to go see the movie. I don’t think 1st Base Charizard will suddenly double in value, nor any Base Set card. The people that were able to ‘invest’ in those already did with the Pokemon Go hype. There won’t be many new collectors/invested being attracted.
ANYTHING, literally ANYTHING bringing marketing to the mainstream of a specific genre will have some carry over. Just look at the IGN detective pikachu breakdown (they have 11 million subs). They use Pokemon card images (old and new) to help carry over the points. Will 11 million people watch this and think, buy cards?! Nope, but the fact that their platform is pretty large, it could easily give viewers a nostalgia bite, which could ultimately add to new collectors. Likewise with the movie itself, it does have a trickle-down effect imo.
I definitely could see a trickle down effect as well , just not as huge as Pokemon:Go. Plus it may bring new kids into the TCG that are going to see the movie.
The Lego movie from 2014 did wonders for Lego products. Not just for kids, but also for adults. It is now fairly mainstream for adults to buy Lego products and build massive projects no kid could ever afford. Their is also a secondary market for collectible mini figures and vintage sets. Most notably, Lego are releasing more and more very big and expensive and exclusive sets each year aimed for adults, which really started to escalate in 2014. The highlight was last year with the UCS (ultimate collector series) millennium falcon for 800 US dollars. Sold out within 15 minutes on release day. Restocking was really slow and people were furious.
I know Lego is a very different beast than Pokemon, and many other factors than just a successful movie was in play. My point is only that we will see what happen.
I think this movie can do nothing but help the tcg, Especially if its well received. It may encourage more people to get into the hobby.
It does look interesting…Having Reynolds as Pikachu will bring in all the Deadpool fans.Plus you have the young kids that love pokemon as well as older fans and parents that have enjoyed the franchise for 10, 20 years.
