So, I saw this on the MMR, and I thought it’d be an interesting topic to kick around on the fourum:
Since it’s good to ask questions first, My first thought is, how LONG after PkMn Go saw its hype, did the TCG see a significant rise? Was kind of curve was it?
I genuinely don’t know because I wasn’t really paying attention then, just collecting what I liked.
Also, for me, I don’t sense the “I’m gonna be the very best” energy with this release, that I did with PkMn Go, but then; Go was first. Go was a different game. It was a different time.
I have heard of many people, who never messed with the card game, download pokemon pocket.
Even if they don’t keep playing after the first month it shows the interest in pokemon and it likely captured some card collectors in the process.
I wouldn’t expect any meteoric rise like pogo… That was a cultural phenomenon extremely difficult to replicate. I can’t even think of another phone game to cause such a ripple in everyday life.
No doubt Pkmn Go had a broader audience, I remember many classmates giving it a try around campus. It was even on the news, people were getting tickets for driving and playing lol, it was definitely a boost to the popularity of the franchise. However, none of my friends ever tried to explore other avenues like the TCG or the DS games. I think its worth sharing that a friend and I were excited about Evolutions at that time, it really stood out from other XY sets.
Pocket seems popular but I can’t tell if it’s only folks who are into pokemon already. I only know a handful of people who play it and by play, they open their free packs and close the app. Again, none of them seem interested to explore pokemon any further. But I would say both would bring in new collectors since they are free to play and can be enjoyed no matter your level of pokemon experience.
I will battle anyone for pink slips
So long as you PROMISE not to use a goddam Mewtwo ex deck
One of my coworkers does not collect TCG but DOES play pocket. I think pocket is more of a quick distraction while Go was more playing regularly and or constantly. IDK, I don’t really remember Go. I got over it, because I didn’t WANT to have to go out to play. That however, may have been part of the draw. Having to go out is something that many people like, but they want an excuse. Go was the perfect excuse. While pocket…
Here in Japan pocket is widespread. People are playing everywhere. Mostly teens and young people who likely don’t collect cards
Yup, my coworker who is much younger, only cares about full arts. Trying my best to not overwhelm him with how good some of the art is lol.
@chriscarp87 I wonder if GO or Pocket introduced anyone in Japan to pokemon? It’s hard for me to imagine anyone can live under a rock over there with so much pokemon exposure.
Haha very doubtful. My son is 4 and even he knows Pikachu despite never playing a Pokemon game, watching it on tv, or playing Pokemon cards before
Maybe we’re seeing the uptick in interest from Pokemon Pocket. Looks like Google has November estimated for a big uptick
I looked at PFM’s post in this thread that gave me the idea to check “Pokemon Cards” on google trends
Great idea. SO it’ll be interesting to see what happens then…
I can confirm there’s a spike in google traffic to e4. It’s looking like a 20% increase but it’s been returning to the mean.
