Preferred sorting for WOTC binders!

Guys, gals and others! We have to talk about how you organize your ol’ gen 1 WOTC binders.

Just assembling my Gyms and I’m very torn. Do you simply follow the set order? Or do you prefer to sort them by the dex numbers? It’s nice to have the evolution lines together after all. And then there is another part of me that wants to sort them by type like the modern sets. It’s just so nice to see a page with only green/red/blue cards etc. :face_with_spiral_eyes:

Also, I feel that perhaps the Gym sets more than other WOTC sets belong together in one binder so maybe sorting them together by national dex numbers?

Would love to hear all of y’alls takes on this conundrum!

Those are the big existential questions of our time. The best solution is to collect all the sets you like multiple times so that you can have multiple binders with multiple configurations…

If you like to sort these sets by type, you can also consider collecting the Japanese versions as they are sorted by Pokedex number within type. The two Gym sets can also be merged and sorted by Gym leader.

I do them by set order, but with one exception: I always put the holos at the back to kind of “build suspense” and make me appreciate the non-holo artworks more on the way to seeing the holos.

I am a strong proponent of set number. I feel like if you’re collecting sets you should present them in accordance to set number. In addition to being the built in organization, to me every set has a “face” characterized by the first page of 9. So organizing by set number is “the right way” for me.

I would never knock anyone’s preferred organization, of course.

I have a 4 pocket zipable binder holding 4 copies of each 1st edition base set card in numerical order (incomplete), and a 12 box (800 cards/box) card house holding extra 1st base copies as well as mass quantities of playable WOTC cards in set then numerical order (will never be complete because once I fill that thing up I’ll just get another one). At some point in the future I’ll transition over to storing them as decks in boxes ordered by format.

Existential questions indeed! I’ll just sell my parents house and start buying up more cards…

Sorting by Gym Leader, I didn’t even think of that! Genius, but now I have one more sorting method to consider.

If Im already sorting for sets, I go for set numbers. If Im sorting for dex order I dont care to organize them by sets in the first place

I love reading everyones binder choices! I personally have multiple of certain sets so I can arrange them differently. One of my favorites and most viewed is the base set binder in pokedex order, 1st, shadowless, then unlimited. It looks so nice!

100% agree. The way you arranged the cards pulls my eyes around the whole page. Well done

Since I don’t have enough to complete sets (the holos) I have just resorted to having my quad column dex binder house all the holos I have. And then I have the 12 card ultra pro binders house the sets with no holos. That way I can have complete binders and not worry about the gaps (which drive me nuts)

I have my (Japanese) collection sorted by set, dex number and trainers by gojuon order. Once I have Jungle set complete I will definitely mix it together with Base and Fossil, since a lot of these cards belong together - Koffing and Doduo families by Arita, Gastly family by Kinebuchi etc.
Gym - haven’t given this too much thought as I don’t have that many cards. Probably separately by gym leader.
Big question is, what about Neo? Standalone or eventually mix it in as well? As a standalone, it would start with a lone Charizard from the Neo Premium file, which is kind of weird. On the other hand, a lot of the neo cards would look kind of weird with the first generation…
