After re-watching SMPratte’s videos on the fossil set (1 year ago), I’ve noticed he mentioned that Dragonite 1st edition holo was underpriced at $450 USD. I haven’t been up to snuff with the pokemon market lately; is that price still consistent with what the market is currently offering? I typically only collect base set cards and trophy cards, hence why I am hesitant in investing in PSA 10 cards and would like other’s opinion.
I’ve had the lowest priced PSA 10 1st Ed. Dragonite on the ebay for the past couple months. There were a couple sellers that listed several copies at one time 5 months ago which I believe had some part in reducing the price due to market saturation. A few buyers since that time have offered $400 for mine but I wouldn’t sell for less than $445… I’m in no rush to sell
Thanks for your opinion! I am just uncertain not really because of the price, but more towards the consistency of PSA grading and investing into a PSA 10. The prices between PSA 9 and 10 is quite huge for fossil, but it makes sense because of how WOTC tends to print imperfect pokemon cards for that set. I just want to be 100% sure before purchasing my first PSA 10 card ever (and possibly my last).
If in general you’re asking if it’s a good investment… Yes! At what price and over what term is the next question… At my price of $445 for example… “maybe”. The rock bottom I’ve seen in the past several months was about $300 at auction, so historically speaking it was possible to get them cheaper fairly recently. Whether that’s still true nowadays I don’t know. Assuming a long term purchase the value will still go up over time regardless of what price
Personally I think the frequency of fossil 1st Ed. holo 10s is higher than @smpratte might’ve at first estimated (And that’s not meant to dig at Scott, everyone has their own reasons for doing what they do). If you were around in those days you would’ve seen that people were buying fossil and storing mint singles as investments after seeing some of the success of the 1st Ed. base set. So there’s no reason to think there couldn’t be some percentage more out there.
And that’s me sort of talking myself out of a potential sale but it’s me being honest
Thank you for your honest opinion. I will take that into consideration
I typically go for the long run when collecting cards, I am just uncertain because I’m not too sure of PSA graded cards in any sets aside from base 1st set.
Scott’s video really hit the nail on the head but it doesn’t seem the market has significant interest in this case or there is too many on offer as the price is almost the same as when the video was released.
That being said, the Fossil 1st Edition set is being included in the next Sports Market report release with a section on it. I think that will generate some interest and I can see the card pushing the $600 mark in a year or two.
On a side note, as someone who is trying to grade a PSA 10 1st Edition Dragonite Holo, it is quite hard. Lots of printing run issues!
