Just curious what the communities thoughts are on getting a PSA 8 card for investment purposes. In my mind it seems like 9 and 10’s are the sweet spot but I’ve came across a PSA 8 that is hard to come by. I don’t flip I just buy and sit on my cards for absurd periods of times.
The price point for PSA 8s is fantastic. Make of that what you will.
I’m not saying they are going to dramatically increase in value, but I also think a lot of people don’t understand how good of a card an 8 is, particularly for old WOTC stuff. It’s near mint. Try finding any near mint ungraded Shadowless holos. It’s almost not a thing anymore.
Also, think of this for a second: a lot of ungraded cards that are probably PSA 8 quality actually fetch a HIGHER price than actual PSA 8 graded cards.
So, basically, I would say that PSA 8s are GREAT value for their current price point.
Rare cards that add hard to come by they are still serviceable and valuable. For everyday cards that are out of packs (even shinings/crystals) they are not sought after as investments because at certain price points you might as well go for the 9 or 10 because they are going to be more liquid. I will never buy an 8 on the market unless it is scarce in general
You know what they say, ‘the older, the rarer, the minter, the better’.
IMO, it depends on the card. There are 3 checkboxes to tick if you want investment-grade cards.
- The card must be popular (everyone in the hobby knows the card)
- The card must be rare (only a small quantity of cards have been released, for me, the number is < 50)
- The card must have significant historical ties to the hobby.
So, what is the card you are talking about?
The card is a Art Academy one.
Looking at the general trend, I’d say yes, the prices do show signs on significant increment over the years so it’s a good ‘investment’. However, assuming you have an English AA instead of a Japanese one, a PSA 8 should be priced as an ungraded copy since these cards have, on average, PSA 9 quality right out the gate.
If the AA card you have are the super scarce ones, then I’m sure the price will spike the next time it sells, assuming the winner doesn’t sell them, but if your AA card is the ones where the winner is open to selling, it might take some time before you see a return after the seller stops selling and cuts off the supply.
I’d buy any art academy card over PSA 10 set cards any day of the week as an investment, I’d even prefer them over sealed product at this point.
Limited or unique releases are the future of Pokemon collecting.
It goes without saying that over the long term they will appreciate less than 9’s and 10’s.
I suspect they will still provide great returns over the next twenty years.
In 20 years, PSA 8s will probably no longer be considered the lowest grade collector’s typically want for WOTC set cards.
Perhaps collect Pokemon cards purely for enjoyment rather than constantly worrying about whether or not it’s a good ‘investment’. If you genuinely want to invest, an index fund or something similar will satisfy your need.
The rarer/less available the card is, the less important the condition becomes in general.
This is why people are generally only satisfied with PSA 10 scream promos but are happy to buy a PSA 5 unikarp
