PSA card with dent on the edge? Caused by slab?

I have a PSA 10 slab and the card clearly has a dent where the small horizontal plastic beam on the top is located in the slab to hold the card in place.

The card could not have had the dent or it would never have gotten a 10. But as shaking does not damage a card, the dent must have been caused while sealing the slab.

Is this possible? Anyone with similar damage marks inside slabs?

Best,
orannge

I believe the chances of a dent being missed is much higher than damage caused by the card shaking/sliding.

Here’s a cross section of a psa holder:

Each of the four edges is surrounded by a “small plastic wall”, so when the card slides and hits the wall, the pressure is spread out along a good portion of that edge rather than a small point of contact.

Thank you for the picture. It demonstrates what I wanted to say. It looks like the card was pressed onto one of the small walls and then snapped back into place without getting stuck.

If this was overlooked … I don’t know … maybe a night shift whithout coffee could explain it too. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

That’s also plausible, an employee does this hundreds/thousands of times and mistakes do happen. I don’t envy their jobs lol

Pinched cards during encapsulation unfortunately are something that could happen. Not super common but I’ve seen several examples.

Here is the makro:

Would mean, the small edges would have been pressed onto the card, because the dent indicates this direction.

Imho this was caused by a decent force applied from above (so yeah pinched).

No amount of rattling can produce this effect, which theoretically (again, in my opinion) could just cause some fraying/chipping or light wear

So, technically this card is damaged and the grade false.

That’s unfortunate, but I think so.

What grade would be realistic with this kind of damage? The rest of the card is perfect in my opinion.

Instant psa 5-6, no matter how minty was the card before. Sorry it happened.

I’ll find another one at some point. I’m a bit disappointed the seller did not mention it though. Anyways, so be it. I’m still happy to have bought the card. :upside_down_face:

The seller probably didn’t notice as the damage was done by PSA. You could pursue PSA’s financial guarantee as this was clearly damaged by PSA.

Thanks for the tip @smpratte , but the the guarantee seems not to cover damages:

" Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Items. The Guarantee applies solely to questions regarding a card’s authenticity or assigned grade and does not cover lost, stolen, or damaged items. These cases are addressed separately by PSA’s insurance policy, which is provided under Section 5 of the PSA grading Terms & Conditions. Contact PSA Customer Service through the PSA Support Form for guidance on how to open a ticket via the Customer Request Center on the PSA website."

The PSA’s terms and conditions read:

"B. Trust and Protection

  1. Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Items. PSA will exercise reasonable and ordinary care in handling items submitted for authentication, grading, review, or reholdering. However, if PSA determines, in its sole discretion, that your item submitted to PSA for PSA Grading Services was lost, stolen, or damaged while in the possession or control of PSA, PSA will compensate you as provided in this Section 10 based upon the fair market value of the item at the time of loss as determined by PSA standard procedures, which may include filing a claim with our insurance carrier. The Declared Value you provide with the submission form for your item is only an estimate of the insured value, and the fair market value of the item may be less than your Declared Value. IN NO EVENT SHALL PSA’S TOTAL LIABILITY, WHETHER CAUSED BY THE ACTIVE OR PASSIVE NEGLIGENCE OF PSA OR OTHERWISE, EXCEED THE LESSER OF THE FAIR MARKET VALUE OR THE DECLARED VALUE OF THE ITEM. WE RESERVE THE RIGHT, IN OUR SOLE DISCRETION, TO DETERMINE THE FAIR MARKET VALUE FOR AN ITEM THROUGH ANY MEANS AS WE MAY DETERMINE. PSA may elect, depending on the condition of a damaged item, to either (a) return the item to you and compensate you for the reduction in value due to damage, or (b) retain the item and pay the maximum liability available under this section."

In any case, I did not pay very much for the card, it has more sentimental than monetary value to me and the little dent adds a nice story to the card itself. I don’t think I want to spend the time dealing with this issue out of Germany, where I live. I just find another one in PSA 10 condition at some point. And if not, then it was not meant to be.

That is their grading Terms & Conditions.

If you wanted to, you could submit under the PSA Grade Guarantee. They will regrade the card and cut you a check for the difference in value between grades.

PSA guarantees that all cards submitted to it shall be graded in accordance with PSA grading standards and under the procedures of PSA. If PSA, in fact, concludes that the card in question no longer merits the PSA grade assigned or fails PSA’s authenticity standards, PSA will either: 1) Buy the card from the submitter at the current market value if the card can no longer receive a numerical grade under PSA’s standards, or 2) Refund the difference in value between the original PSA grade and the current PSA grade if the grade is lowered. In this case, the card will also be returned to the customer along with the refund for the difference in value.

It seems, I would have to provide a PSA order number to send in an item for regrading. But I don’t have such a number, because I bought the card from a private seller on ebay.

Or maybe I don’t fully understand the process.

Anyway, thank you very much for your help. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Just found a thread with the exact same damages … seems to happen to others too …

No worries, you are misunderstanding the process a little. It has changed quite a lot in the past few years, so here are the updated directions.

Create a PSA account
Click on Customer Request Center
Choose Brand Protection Request
Choose Authenticity/Grade Review
Write your Description, Phone Number, Country, and Front/Back Images of the card in question.
You’ll get an email with further direction.

Oh, wow, thank you. I really did misunderstand it. I will do as you said and report back, what the response will be. :+1:
