Hi all,
I’m trying to calculate the value of my binder set collection for insurance purposes. This used to be pretty easy with plenty of eBay sold listings, but these have really dried up for many sets, and often those that do show up are in lackluster condition.
By NM-MINT+, I mean there is no card in these sets that would grade below a PSA 8. I have personally gone through every set and replaced cards I am not satisfied with with PSA 8 or 9 copies removed from cases (yes, I send back to PSA for them to update the POP report). The majority of cards are PSA 9 worthy with 10s here and there; I have occasionally graded more expensive cards to get PSA 10s and then replaced them with uncased PSA 9s.
Here are the sets in question:
1st Ed. Base Non Holo
1st Ed. Fossil
1st Ed. Jungle
1st Ed. Team Rocket
1st Ed. Gym Heroes
1st Ed. Gym Challenge
1st Ed. Neo Genesis
1st Ed. Neo Discovery
1st Ed. Neo Revelation (with Shinings)
1st Ed. Neo Destiny (no Shinings)*
Southern Islands
Legendary Collection Regular/Base Set
Legendary Collection Reverse Holo Set (no Boxtoppers)
Expedition
Aquapolis (no Crystals)*
Skyridge (no Crystals)*
EX Ruby and Sapphire (with ultra rares)
EX Sandstorm (with ultra rares)
EX Dragon (with ultra rares)
* I can find this with sold listings, but if anyone has a top of their mind figure for these it would help:
8-card PSA 10 1st Ed. Neo Destiny Shinings Set
6-card PSA 10 Skyridge Crystals Set (regular holo, not reverses)
3-card PSA 10 Aquapolis Crystals Set
I’ve always been pretty anal about the condition of my binder sets, and a lot of times it’s easier to just get a PSA 9 card than to search for actual mint ungraded cards
@qwachansey, How about using the PSA 9 set values from PokemonPrice.com? Seems like that’s about the average condition. This would get you a ballpark idea and you could adjust up or down as needed.
I’ve considered that, but people likely put a premium on actual graded PSA 9s, plus it factors in the cost to grade each card – maybe could do those values minus say 25%?
Raw mint+ cards in some situations are worth as much if not more than a PSA 9 copy. Sometimes people are so thirsty to buy a card and grade the PSA 10 themselves that they “overpay” for raw mint cards.
If you are literally cracking out PSA 8 and 9 cards to put into your binder then I would simply take the pokemonprice.com values of a PSA 8 set and a PSA 9 set. That would set the bounds on value and somewhere in that bracket would be your price. What percentage would be your decision as you already proposed your own from a different suggestion above.
Typically a raw PSA 8/9 quality card will be worth less than the price of a PSA 8 or 9 card by at least the cost of bulk grading. (~$10 per card) but again as mentioned above some people overpay.
My brother. Don’t crack those case just to be secure in the fact you’re getting that quality. Send the 8/9s to me and I’ll replace them with guaranteed condition 8/9s.
Thanks for the offer Gary… sadly I’ve cracked most that I have over the years. If you’ve got a ton of cards, off the top of my head I’ve got these still in cases:
PSA 9 Neo Destiny 1st Ed. Dark Feraligatr
PSA 9 Neo Destiny 1st Ed. Dark Tyranitar
PSA 9 Aquapolis Jumpluff Holo
PSA 9 Fossil 1st Ed. Articuno Holo
PSA 9 Fossil 1st Ed. Ditto Holo
Random stuff I can’t remember
I’ve got some PSA 8-9 Base 1st Ed. Holos, but for those 8s I just get off-centered ones so I’m happy with them vs a perfectly centered 8 with worse corners or scratching.
I’m in a similar position as you whereas for the most part, I actually prefer collecting Binder Sets as opposed to PSA Graded Sets. However, I really don’t like to sacrifice overall condition within my Binder Sets - so everything is considered NM+/M Condition (PSA 8 to PSA 9 Range).
I have an Excel File where I record approximate retail values for my entire collection. By “retail values” I’m referring to a semi-realistic value that I believe I could sell “X” Item for within my eBay Store - maybe list “X” Item for a couple hundred more and accept an offer for the amount recorded within my Excel File (not that I would ever actually sell any of this stuff). Anyway, I just updated my Excel File about a month ago and actually ran into the same issues you’re experiencing - placing an accurate value on these Complete Sets is becoming really, really, really tough! Haha
Here’s what I have recorded within my records for pricing - be curious to know what your thoughts are!
1st Ed. Base Non-Holo Set = $1,500.00
1st Ed. Jungle Set - Complete = $500.00
1st Ed. Fossil Set - Complete = $500.00
1st Ed. TR Set - Complete = $750.00
1st Ed. GH Set - Complete = $750.00
1st Ed. GC Set - Complete = $750.00
1st Ed. NG Set - Complete = $750.00
1st Ed. ND Set - Complete = $750.00
1st Ed. NR Set - Complete w/ No Shinings = $750.00
1st Ed. ND Set - Complete w/ No Shinings = $1,000.00
Legendary Collection - Complete = $750.00
Legendary Collection (REV.) - Complete = $2,500.00
Expedition Set - Complete = $1,500.00
Aquapolis Set - Complete w/ No Crystals = $1,500.00
Southern Island Set - Complete = $175.00
We really are in the same boat, because I also have an Excel file with all the values over the years. Was actually trying to update it yesterday hence this post! When I get home I’ll post the values I had estimated
@qwachansey, LOVE seeing that “Price Paid” Section! Haha
We’re pretty spot-on with one another regarding values - give or take $100.00 or so here and there. I did not realize 1st Ed. Neo Destiny was worth that much without the Shining Cards - that does make sense though considering the jump in Booster Box Pricing this past month or so! The only big discrepancy I noticed was the Rev. Holo Legendary Collection Set - that’s a tough one to place an accurate value on as there really isn’t any recent sales data to base pricing off. I purchased my set off an eBay Auction back in January 2016 for $750.00 without the Rev. Holo Charizard - purchased that card separately shortly afterwards for $100.00 ($850.00 Total in 2016). My value is definitely a bit high at $2,500.00. However, I could see something between our two values being accurate ($2,000.00ish).
I’m Curious… Are these values before or after viewing Pokemon Prices?
This was before viewing Pokemon Price, I would probably bump up a few of mine now, esp. Jungle and Fossil. I actually sold my spare Neo Destiny set in Feb. 2018. It was a solid PSA 9 worthy set, but given holos are nearly $100 each I might actually bump up current value from $1.5k. And Legendary Collection reverse is definitely difficult, again this is one where I was very thrown off by Pokemon Price!
