I’m looking to open at least a few packs of the English base set and I’m wondering what the odds are that the non-holos will be PSA 10 worthy? Looking to offset the cost of the packs somewhat as in the long run those 10’s will sell.
The first and last cards in the pack have low probability. They’re most likely to be damaged in by the pack rubbing on their corners/edges. Centering is the other big issue for 10s, if one pack in a booster box is off centered most of the other cards in the box are. If you can avoid an oc issue you’ll have a high probability of pulling a 6-8 PSA 10 worth card out of the pack. Unless you run into a strict grader who doesn’t give out 10s, then you’re sol anyway.
Those opportunities are disappearing. Sure psa 8/9 quality non holos that appear minty, maybe gem candidates for the odd rattata and bill here and there
We’re talking Base Unlimited here. lol Do people even grade these? There’s gazillion product out there which would be much cheaper than opening $50 packs IMO.
I would actually help OP with this, but the packs I’ve opened were all 4th print and I’m hanging onto the non holos for a long time.
I’m planning to open for the holos though, gotta get those Charizards (or Blastoise, or Venusaur), but if I can offset the cost at least somewhat then it’d be less expensive in the long run.
So you’ll be opening booster boxes then? I thought you meant cracking a few loose packs.
It’s totally up to you, but you can get the cards way cheaper than buying $2500 boxes or whatever they go for right now. The holos I would personally just buy graded. Good luck whatever you decide, I’m just saying don’t expect opening Base Unlimited product to be +EV when most holos in PSA 9 are worth less than the price of a pack.
Sure you can grade the non holos, but it’s not like there’s buyers lined up for these… even Shadowless 10s are a tough sell.
No I’m sorry, I’ll be opening a few packs to get a feeling for it, and for nostalgia. I think it’s too early (or too late) to start opening whole boxes, I’m thinking in the long run I’ll get my money’s worth back, but it will take long for the non-holos to sell. I think $2.5K is a hefty investment though, on the other hand it does make sure they are unweighted.
