I think a lot of the art doesn’t get picked not because it’s not good art, because there are a lot of beautiful submissions, but because the art is too busy or detailed for a very small card.
Whilst these are fantastic designs I hope they return to the 2009/2010 contest style at some point where participants are given a template to fill in.
I cannot fault any of these designs, but ultimately they all look like generic set card designs that the Pokémon company would produce anyway. They’re all so well refined that there’s little personalisation to any of them.
I admit to resenting it at first with a knee-jerk reaction like, “Ugh, of course it’s Charizard.” But after reading the judge’s description of it, it made me realize that this artwork inhabits every child’s fantasy of what it means to be a Pokemon Master - having your toughened Pokemon finally advancing to the big stages of battles, presenting itself with a dynamic pose right after it comes out of the pokeball, the dust settling and the amass of the crowd going wild after seeing it. It makes sense why this won.
Have they said how many copies are going to be printed? All I saw was it say the card will be printed as a promo, so depending on what kind of promo it could be pretty easy to get
Charizard collectors are used to just getting their copies from regular printed sets. After the 600 copy V-Max promo and now this promo, both not obtainable from a normal box set will will displease them.
The Charizard winning is a 1000000% improvement over the ugly, generic, lazy ‘no risk’ Gardevoir of last year, yet it’s still nothing in comparison with Bathtub Slowpoke.
Every entry shown had potential and were all above the average standard. It’s bad enough that entries had to compete for each other for one planned release result instead of having one per pokemon.
The perspective I had from before has shifted after seeing the point shown by @azulryu 's view of pokémon through the audience intended. Meanwhile, I’m writing comprehending a thought pattern of the system’s decisions playing like this but pokémon and art. Gordon Ramsay Boiling Point Extended Highlights - YouTube
I think that is a bit harsh. All 50 submitted artworks could have easily won last year (honestly alot of these people are professional artists already…), same with this years contest. For example: I liked urinori’s Mewtwo the most (seriously, i like the style of him) and think that should have won. But we are not professional illustrators. We do not see what the judges see.
Remember that this is still a contest. There was a theme going on called “Landscape with Pokemon” and the Judges picked Gardevoir. They are professionals and thought that card fitted the theme the most.
