If I’m not finger painting in yellow while watching the latest smpratte video, then I am most likely browsing theme decks, as they are clearly peak Pokemon collecting. But I keep seeing “sold” listings like …
Brushfire for example has 4 charmanders and 2 charmeleons. Even if they grade PSA 9, which seem to be going for about 200, that is already 1200 in value. That’s not including grading the foil, PSA 10 chance, or the potential to have a shadowless deck. I’d say prices of base theme decks are still catching up for the value you can get out of one.
I have noticed that error cards in general have had quite an uptick in price over the past 2 months. When i first started collecting them, no one cared for them. In a post of cards for sale on facebook, they were always the last to sell.
Now, they are getting a lot of coverage from popular youtubers and becoming more mainstream. It’s not really an oddity, but it is sad as i will never be able to afford an inverted stamp WB promo now hah.
Base unlimited PSA 9 commons/uncommons. I have 9 cards left for 102/102 and people are typically bidding 80$+ and in some cases 100$+. I’ve spent 7-12$ on the other 80 or so PSA 9s I currently have. I’ll likely have to grade the last 9 cards myself. I’ve ordered some raw cards but while they look gem mint in eBay pictures they’re near mint upon further inspection usually due to bad surfaces but no whitening. Luckily I have this guy already but an example
PSA 9 unlimited poliwhirl did 100$ with 20 bids
@assassin5757, The prices of unlim 9 commons/uncommons is blowing my mind at the moment. Like you said, i remember when i couldn’t even sell my 10s for more that $20.
The prices of 1st ed jungle and fossil commons/uncommons is equally crazy.
As I finished buying the last ones that were still underpriced, Rusty did a video last week lol right after the whole 30k Bulbasaur story and rush to 1st edition / shadowless cards began… all decks got unlisted or relisted x10 + everyone on social media posting cracking them open sleeving and sending to PSA express
@pokebowl, I reckon the same thing has happened with all 1st ed WoTC booster packs recently. Even if they were light, you could make much more money opening them and grading them. Never in my life did i think commons would be worth this much.
I’ve been observing especially the 2 Player Starter Set theme deck and I came to your same conclusion. Considering it has 4 Charmanders, 2 Charmeleons and a 1st edition Machamp holo and the prices they are going for in high psa grades the price spike seems more than justified and possibly even low. The 100% non shadowless ones are selling anywhere from 400$ to 600$ (which is a lot of difference). However I do agree with @zorloth, that the regular unlimited cards shouldn’t be worth that much. A discussion about these theme decks would make a pretty interesting thread.
I can confirm that the Thunderstorm deck was not sold at listed price but it was a reasonable offer was taken. The decks have been crazy the past few months and with all the base deck prices multiplying 5-6x over a week. Its a shame because many times it is people who just see the front and dont realize there are different deck styles between possible shadowless and guaranteed unlimited. Hopefully it goes back down, although I doubt it will anytime soon.
Graded cards have been rising as well for Full art trainers and just across the board. I was able to find some PSA9 trainers for $10-15 but now they are generally ending $25+ but many getting into $40-50 range.
This is completely unsustainable. There are literally probably tens of thousands of common/uncommon potential-9s for every single card in Base Set chilling out there ungraded.
It’s stuff like this that convinces me further that we’re do for a major recourse sometime soon (like, as soon as the COVID backlog unclogs).
But the covid backlog, along with the social media hype and everyone finding their basement cards and thinking sending them in is free money, isnt likely to be cleared out for many months at this point and it is only getting worse for other grading companies as well.
I’m all for prices dropping so I can get more of my collection but I just dont see it happening for a year at this point.
I’m assuming SwordPeace was mostly just referring PSA 9/10 Base Unlimited non-holos. I’ll probably offend someone by saying it, but those things are going to drop like a fucking rock, whether it’s a month from now, 6 months from now, or a year from now. As it currently stands, there are more PSA-graded 1st Ed. Base non-holos than Unlimited Base non-holos…that should tell you all you need to know about how quickly the pops on these are going to explode.
I think some other things will retrace, too. But not everything will – and some cards will almost certainly be worth more in a year than they are now. There’s not going to be some universal, fixed retrace. Different cards will retrace/increase by different amounts.
It will also get worse. When the people that got into Pokémon to “invest” see their 1st edition PSA 10 metapod or any other common/uncommon dropping like a rock they are going to hit the market again.

Fear of missing out on selling for what I paid
Lol
At this point. I’m not even buying anything that isn’t actually scarce in some way.
Promos, gold stars, trophy cards, zards, no rarity, cards that are hard to grade, I’ll keep buying stuff like this for now.
A little pissed I missed out on the University Karp this morning on yahoo. It went for higher than my snipe lol.
